Dear Colleagues,

The recent news of President Gee's upcoming retirement was a surprise to many in the university community. That announcement has attracted national attention, and I personally have received emails and phone calls from people I hadn't heard from in years.

I also have been asked by many staff, faculty and alumni about the impact that President Gee's departure may have on our college. I have responded by saying that President Gee has fervently supported us - more so than any other university president I have known. His participation in our White Coat Ceremony and his attendance at our commencement events, in addition to his visits with our alumni and his ongoing interest in our students showed that he wanted us to be successful - and for that I am truly grateful.

As Provost Alutto assumes the role of Interim President, a position he first held in 2007, it is important to remember that he is familiar with this responsibility, and he knows what it takes to meet the needs of the university community. Provost Alutto also was significantly involved with our college long before I arrived. And since I joined the university, he and I have met monthly to discuss important hires, major facility enhancements, and the many achievements of our staff, students, and faculty. He definitely knows our college - our strengths, our challenges, and our needs.

I am confident that Provost Alutto will maintain a strong commitment to our college, and I look forward to additional support from our new provost, Dr. Joseph Steinmetz, who is the current Dean of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences. He and I have already met to discuss our college and its needs, and I have found him to be an engaging and thoughtful person with whom I know we will have a positive and productive partnership.

Although I did not anticipate this change in senior leadership, I am confident that our college's strengths and accomplishments have demonstrated our great potential and our leadership in the dental profession. I will do all I can to ensure that we continue on a path that leads to a future of unprecedented success.
