Dear Colleagues,

Late this morning, our associate deans, our chief administrative officer, and I met with Dr. Patrick Ferrillo, the head of the

accreditation site team visiting our college the past few days. He and more than 20 other visitors from 14 different institutions were here to review nine of our educational programs, including our pre-doctoral and dental hygiene programs. Although we will not receive an official report from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) for several months, Dr. Ferrillo provided us with the details his team will communicate to the Commission for each of the programs they reviewed.

I am pleased to let you know that our advanced education programs in Endodontics, General Practice Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics were all judged to meet or exceed their respective standards. We were also informed that the site visit team found our dental hygiene program to be in full compliance with the Commission's standards. For our pre-doctoral program, the most complex of all the programs being reviewed, the site visitors let us know that they will make a recommendation to the Commission involving one of our 42 competencies -- a competency that we are quite confident can be implemented and evaluated at a high standard within the next term.

Dr. Ferillo also shared with us a number of strengths that he and his team noticed during their time at our college. These included positive comments about our faculty and staff, our pool of patients, our curricula, and the support we receive from the University's senior leadership. I was most pleased to hear the site team's comments about our students and residents. Dr. Ferrillo let us know how impressed he was with the excitement these groups expressed about our college. He said they were "fantastic," "very positive," and that they "cared about the institution." We were also told that when our dental students were asked if there was one thing about our college that they hoped would not change, they said, "The faculty. We like them just the way they are." What better outcome measure could there be than to hear these comments from our students and residents?

This is a proud moment for our college, the University's senior leaders, our colleagues on campus, and our alumni. I want to express my sincere appreciation to the many faculty and staff members who spent months preparing for this event that takes place once every seven years. I am especially grateful for the dedication and hard work of our Offices of Academic Affairs and Clinic Administration, our Division of Dental Hygiene, and the directors and staff of the eight advanced education programs that were reviewed. Congratulations to all!
