Dear Colleagues,

On Tuesday, I attended our annual Student Government Association (SGA) Teaching Awards celebration, and I want to share with you some features of this event that impressed me beyond all expectations.

The SGA awards recognize our college's best educators, and the process for choosing them is as special as the awards themselves. All the dental hygiene and dental classes select faculty members they believe are worthy of special recognition for their classroom, pre-clinical, and clinical instruction.

At the event, students announce each winner, and they describe the attributes that made the award winner so deserving. Of all the laudatory remarks I heard at this year's celebration, what impressed me most were the unique and personalized descriptions our students used to express their appreciation for each outstanding faculty member. Here are a few of my favorites:

"You know your patients will get the absolute best dental care when you work with him."

"Her tests are challenging, but fair."

"Everyone knows he holds you to a high standard."

"Ours is a big class, but he still finds time to be concerned about how everyone is doing."

One SGA leader said there simply weren't enough awards for all the talented faculty who provide learning experiences that help our students become better clinicians and pracitioners. What a wonderful thing to say!

As the evening came to a close, I saw how much this event meant to those who gave and received the awards. In the best student-teacher relationships, each gains knowledge and insights from the other, and I was proud to see that this is true for our students and the faculty who educate them.
