Dear Colleagues,

It seems as if there's an opportunity almost every week for me to express our college's appreciation for the efforts of those who support us and our missions. This week set a record with three events at which I was able to let people know how much our college benefits from what they do.

The first was during a lunch we hosted to celebrate Dental Assistants Recognition Week. With pizza as the entrée and the gift of a College of Dentistry mug to remember the occasion, I thanked nearly 60 dental assistants for the many ways they help us to better care for patients and educate students. I also let them know that their broad scope of responsibilities adds tremendous value to our clinical and teaching operations, and that without them our college would not be as productive and effective as it is. That event was on Tuesday.

On Wednesday evening, it was my distinct pleasure to offer welcoming remarks to those who attended the Alfred W. Reader Endowed Professorship reception. Along with staff and faculty members, our generous alumni attended the event that celebrated the successful fundraising efforts that completed the endowment. The event also recognized Dr. Melissa Drum as the first recipient of this professorship. I thanked all those who helped make this endowment possible, and I reminded them that their contributions would continue in perpetuity to support the faculty, the research, and the ideals of the Division of Endodontics.

Today, at the end of our annual Research Day program, I was pleased to acknowledge the scholarly achievements of our students, residents, and post-docs. In total, 42 presenters were judged on the scientific merit and innovation of their work. The topics ranged from the study of subgingival microbiomes, to the use of social media in the dental school setting, and the effects of orthognathic surgery on the quality of patients' lives. With an audience that filled the banquet hall at the Ohio Union, I had the chance to speak about the importance of having a strong research program in the college, and I was privileged to present eight awards for outstanding research achievements.

What a week it was! Inspiring, enlightening, and rewarding for me and the hundreds of others with whom I shared these important events. How fortunate we are to work among such dedicated, grateful, and talented people. It's no wonder that dentistry continues to attract the attention and interest of so many, while it sets the standard among our academic and professional peers.
