First Thursday College of Dentistry News

Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues:

Although the process began over a year ago, it wasn't until this Tuesday afternoon that we gathered to celebrate. I especially looked forward to the event this year because I knew our guests of honor so much better than when I joined the college a year ago. This time, I'd read their CVs, their publications, and their letters of recommendation, and I'd written my own letters of support for them. I was so proud to be there at the annual Faculty Recognition Program that honors Ohio State faculty members' promotions and awards of tenure.

The celebration was held in the Grand Lounge at the Faculty Club. As I leafed through the event program, I looked for the names of our faculty who were honored with others throughout the University. Listed next to Melissa Drum's name was an Ohio State historian and a librarian. Gene Leys was between a veterinarian and an ecologist. Bobby Thikkurissy's name was adjacent to a pediatrician and a geographer. Shereen Azer was flanked by an anesthesiologist and an engineer, and Purnima Kumar was next to an optometrist and a mathematician. Our faculty members were in great company!

Carol Diedrichs, Ohio State's Director of Libraries, and President Gee made welcoming remarks that set a celebratory tone for the occasion, but what struck me most about the event was the fact that we truly are One University. Our college is distinctly different from the others on campus, and that's what gives us our unique professional identity. But what really connects us to one another is our commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. Like our colleagues in other disciplines, we practice our profession each day, but we're also continually shaping and refining it so those who follow us are better prepared for the challenges and rewards that lie ahead. I was so glad to share that proud moment of achievement with our faculty, and I'm pleased to share that experience with you.

Give Kids a Smile Event Succeeds!

The College of Dentistry's Give Kids a Smile event, held October 13, provided dental care for 102 patients, from infants and toddlers to adolescents and children with special needs. Faculty members and residents joined dental students and dental hygiene students to provide a range of treatments, including sealants, cleanings, stainless steel crowns, pulpotomies, pulpectomies and composites. Families also scheduled follow-up appointments for additional care, as needed.

"We know that getting proper dental care can be expensive for struggling families, so we're excited to have been able to offer this opportunity for children in the Columbus area," says Dr. Elizabeth Gosnell, Assistant Professor, Division of Pediatric Dentistry." It's also a great learning opportunity for our dental students, as they get to know the needs of children from a wide variety of backgrounds."

Dentistry Float Wins Second-Place Prize at Homecoming Parade

The College of Dentistry's dental hygiene and dental students joined together to build a float for this year's Homecoming Parade that celebrated Ohio State's 100th homecoming event.

On the evening of October 5, College of Dentistry faculty and staff gathered at the corner of 12th Avenue and High Street to cheer on the college's molar-shaped float. One of the largest in the parade, the "Mighty Molar" float took the second-place prize of $500.00.

D3 student George Williams, who helped to lead the float-building effort, announced that the cash prize would be donated to the college's 2013 Homecoming Parade fund. Asked for a comment about the molar float's second-place win, Williams said, "It was our crowning achievement!"
