Winter Tips

Bring your computers and electronics indoors during the extreme cold of winter. Frankly, I don't know why you'd leave your computer in the trunk of your car overnight anyway, but there are good reasons to bring it inside. One reason is that your screen won't work right away. The LCD display needs to warm up. Another reason is that extreme temperature swings - say from 10° in your trunk to 70° in your office - can cause condensation in your circuitry. That's not good, either. If you have a computer with flash memory instead of a hard drive, your computer will be more susceptible to problems.

And, in a follow-up to the power outages of Super Storm Sandy, many people who had backup generators couldn't find gasoline to keep them running. You might want to see if running your generator on natural gas or propane is an option. We've begun the three-stage process of converting ours to run on natural gas. We'll keep you posted on our progress.

Where's My Speed Channel?

"My computer worked fine at the coffee shop. Why is it so slow at home?" We're hearing this complaint more than we'd like. The problem usually is that you don't have your connection set to the channel at home that gives you less interference. Here's a quick way to see if the problem is an incorrect channel setting.

School-Dazed Networks

A talk on "The Global Technology Outlook" by William La Fontaine, Vice President of Technical Strategy & Worldwide Operations Research, IBM, at the Morris County Chamber of Commerce raised a lot of interesting points about the role technology needs to play to help our students be competitive in the job market. As a parent and IT specialist, I have strong opinions to share.

Data-Plan Drains

We've talked about keeping your data usage in line with your plan to avoid expensive extra charges. It's getting easier and easier to exceed your plan's limits, and it's going to get more expensive. Here are some data-plan drains you can easily plug.

Microsoft Patch Day

The second Tuesday of every month is known as Microsoft Patch Day. It's the day that Microsoft issues all of its software patches designed to make your operating system more secure and efficient. We recommend you run Microsoft Update to find the appropriate updates for your Windows OS software and for other Microsoft programs you run, such as Microsoft Office. If you're not sure where to find Microsoft Update or which patches and updates to download, call us at 973-433-6676, and we'll walk you through the steps.
