President's Message-
Dr. Maureen Pezzementi
Dear District Members,
As the summer fades and juggling various school schedules becomes the norm once again, we are getting ready for another year of meetings and fellowship. I hope all of you have had an opportunity to recharge and visit some of our local recreational sites, providing a little economic stimulus. I would like to thank all who helped represent our District as delegates at the State meeting this summer. Your service to organized dentistry is appreciated. I also want to thank Dr. Milton Essig, for his leadership this past year as President. It is due to your dedication and service, along with that of the Executive Council and Committee members, that has enabled our district to return not only to fiscal health but continue to have meetings where friends can reconnect as they keep updated on new advances in the profession.
We will be continuing on our bimonthly schedule with a change from our normal first Tuesday of the month schedule in September. We will meet on Thursday September 12th at The Club on Red Mountain to start the year. I am delighted that we have been able to start the year with a presentation by our own Dr. David Sarver. As he lectures around the world, we are most fortunate that his schedule allows us to invite him to speak to us. We will be having an all day seminar on October 18th with Dr. Fred Margolis, who will present "Esthetic Dentistry for Tots and Teens" followed by "the Star Wars of Dentistry" an introduction to lasers in dentistry with a hands-on session. We will be posting more details about this opportunity in the near future. November we will meet the second Tuesday of the month, to avoid Election Day and meet on November 12th with a seminar by Dr. John Coke. In January we will meet on the 1st Tuesday, the 7th with our long delayed presentation by Dr. John Burgess, for an update on Biomaterials. March the 4th we will welcome Dr. Tony Morlandt, a new faculty member in the Department of Oral Surgery at the Dental School who will talk with us about oral cancers. We will close the year with a meeting on May 6th with the Dean's address by Dr. Michael Reddy.
As always, we will keep you apprised of what is happening in the profession at the state and national level. We will attempt to keep these updates as concise as possible so that the focus of each meeting is a chance for catching up with friends and honing our professional skills as we update our knowledge. I am looking forward to an exciting year and am grateful for your support. Please do not hesitate to let us on the Executive Council know of any suggestions for how we can make our District even better as we serve our membership.
With Warm Affection,
Maureen Pezzementi

UAB Dentistry Cares
Community Day
UAB Dentistry is passionate about our mission to optimize oral health in Alabama and beyond.
On Wednesday, October 9, 2013, the School of Dentistry will host an exciting new service project. For one day, our volunteer team will treat the basic dental needs-prophys, restorations and extractions- of the low-income, underserved in our community at no cost.
With such a great need for service in our community, we anticipate more patients than we can reasonably treat in one day so we are asking for your help. Working together we can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.
Please consider partnering with us by serving as a volunteer dentist on UAB Dentistry Cares day and/or accepting one patient for one appointment for minimal treatment at a later date. If that is not an option for you we have a variety of sponsorship opportunities and would appreciate any and all support you can provide.
Please contact Conan Davis, DMD, at 205-996-2724 or conand@uab.edu for more information or to volunteer or pledge your commitment. We look forward to collaborating with you on this mission.
WHAT: Treating basic dental needs - prophys, restorations, extractions - of the low-income, underserve... one day of the year
WHY: According to NIDCR, over half of adults, aged 20-64, below the federal poverty level report their teeth in either "fair" or "poor" condition, while less than 50% see a dentist regularly due to no private or public insurance.
WHEN: Wednesday, October 9, 2013, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
WHERE: UAB School of Dentistry

Update on progress of study ideas submitted to The National Dental PBRN
A total of 61 study concepts have been submitted to the nation's network since May 2012. This news item provides an overview about this flurry of activity and the status of these study concepts. The flow chart below depicts an abridged version of the various steps in the network's study development process.
Of the 61 study concepts submitted, 26 have been reviewed by the Executive Committee already. Of these 26, the Committee has approved seventeen and rejected nine. Of the seventeen approved by the Executive Committee, ten have been submitted to the NIDCR Clinical Studies Group (CSG), five of which have been approved, three have been rejected, and two are still under consideration. Four studies have already received Study Team approval by the NIDCR CSG (cracked teeth registry, dentin hypersensitivity, decision aids for the management of suspicious occlusal caries lesions, and barriers and facilitators to rubber dam use during root canal treatment). Two of these (barriers and facilitators to rubber dam use during root canal treatment and cracked teeth registry) received approval of the full protocol by the Executive Committee with pending approval from the NIDCR CSG.
The nation's network continues to be very active in developing new studies! To learn more about the network, please visit our website at NationalDentalPBRN.org.
