Dr. James C. Broome
Mentors Needed

I'd like to recruit a group of Birmingham area dentists who would be willing to serve as mentors for UAB pre-dental students.  We have a very strong (more than 40) pre-dental society and many of them have requested shadowing opportunities and the chance to chat with practicing dentists about their career choice.  It's a tough  world out there - our entering class GPA was better than 3.8 last year.  If you would be willing to provide encouragement and advice for these young people, and allow them to observe you in your practice, please contact me via email.

President's Message

Projections and Reflections          Feb. 20, 2013

Dear Colleagues,

As we advance to the second half of our business /academic year, July 2012 - June 2013, I wish to provide you an information up- brief:

1.     GIVE KIDS A SMILE (GKAS)

Special gratitude is extended to Dr. Angel Rohner and her staff for their commitment and outstanding effort in directing this program.  Please see her article in our newsletter.  This program offers a magnificent opportunity to offer the gift of oral health to needy children in our community, and we are most appreciative to all who have contributed.

2.     NOMINATIONS FOR 2013 - 14

Dr. Jennifer Davis is chairing our nominating committee for leadership positions in our society.  Her nomination report will be presented at the March meeting and will be followed by the election process.  This will represent our future, and we are grateful to those willing to serve.

3.     ALDA UPDATE

Dr. Zack Studstill will provide an important presentation relative to the ALDA legislative agenda and ongoing initiatives at the state level.

4.     DEAN'S REPORT

Dean Michael Reddy will deliver the Annual School of Dentistry Dean's Report followed by a CE program entitled "Oral Health and Medical Wellness".

5.     NEW MEMBERS

The most recent ALDA bulletin showed a large number of practitioners who have joined ALDA with the BDDS leading the way with nineteen (19) NEW MEMBERS.   This is most encouraging as it validates the importance of organized dentistry.

Finally, our March meeting promises to be highly informative and educational, and accordingly,   I look forward to visiting with you during an enjoyable evening of camaraderie and education.

Sincerely,

Give Kids A Smile!  2013

BDDS Members,

Give Kids a Smile! In Birmingham has had 10 years of tremendous success!  Our members have provided dental care for over 1100 children who would not otherwise have had access to dental care.

In 2008 we introduced changes which allowed you to participate in this event from the comfort of your private office. This change has been very successful and we plan to continue and improve this approach.  Due to the difficult economic times the number of children who need this type of program has increased.  Many families who had insurance and took care of their families five years ago find themselves in need of help now.  The opportunity has never been greater for the dental community to make a difference through this important local mission.

This year we need volunteer dentists to commit to seeing patients in their private offices for a cleaning/ screening appointment and one operative visit.  UAB School of Dentistry will not be providing a screening/ cleaning event this year.  Therefore, it is up to our members to conduct this event within our offices.

I can provide all volunteer dentists with a 'limited doctor/patient relationship' consent document for use when seeing GKAS patients.  United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) will spread flyers throughout local schools and health clinics advertising the Give Kids A Smile event.  I will submit a list of volunteer dentists to our contact at UWCA.  UWCA will then call volunteer dentists and give them the contact information on eligible patients as they become available.  Volunteer dentists can then have their staff schedule appointments for GKAS patients.

GKAS patients are between the ages of 5 and 12 years old.  And, volunteer dentists should feel free to specify if they are comfortable seeing patients 8 and older or all age patients.  Approximately 40% of past GKAS patients have come from our Hispanic community and translators are available through UWCA if necessary.

Please call me or email if you can help with Give Kids A Smile!

RAISES $3,900 FOR CAHABA VALLEY HEALTH CARE

The UAB Chapter of the American Student Dental Association's Philanthropic Run

Supports Local Healthcare Access Provider

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - January 22, 2013 - The UAB Chapter of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) held its annual Miles for Smiles philanthropy run on September 8, 2012 at Crestline Elementary School, raising over $3,900 for Cahaba Valley Health Care. More than 150 runners and 30 local sponsors participated in the event that included a 5k, one-mile fun run, live entertainment, door prize, award ceremony and post-race celebration at Otey's Tavern in Crestline Village.

"Participating in the Miles for Smiles race was a fun, interactive way for my fellow dental students to race for good cause," said first-year UAB dental student Daniel Burgin. "This race inspires the participants to take ownership of their health and have the opportunity to support the Cahaba Valley Health Care clinic to help extend their services and build a stronger and healthier Birmingham community."

Cahaba Valley Health Care is a nonprofit organization based in central Alabama that provides access to healthcare and dental services for the underserved, primarily Hispanic, communities in Jefferson and Shelby Counties.

The check was presented to Cahaba Valley during their annual barbecue lunch held on January 12, 2013. During the presentation Director of Development at Cahaba Valley Health Care Edwina Taylor said they plan to use the donation in their dental clinics that serve more than 500 patients annually. "The Cahaba Valley Health Care team is extremely grateful for the hard work that the UAB Dental Students put into their fundraising efforts for our organization. We are able to better serve our many patients because of their generous contribution."

The UAB Chapter of ASDA president Ross Isbell stated that ASDA prides itself on our members' commitment to giving back to the Birmingham community and our leadership team continually identifies opportunities to educate, advocate and provide service to support oral health and proper oral hygiene.

"Utilizing these opportunities to make a difference while we are in dental school allows us to incorporate a service learning component into our community outreach," said Isbell.  "We hope to build on the success of this event and provide even greater support for Cahaba Valley Health Care."
