Dr. Richard Vest update
If you have not heard, Dr. Vest was in a motorcycle accident. Below is a message from Dr. Vest's wife, Janet, from July 29th. Once I receive an update on his condition, I will pass it along in a special e-blast.
Treasured friends and family
We continue to thank God for His amazing grace & mercy not only to spare Richard's life yesterday, but also to keep him from paralysis. A few may just be learning that during our family's weekend visit to G'ville ,SC to visit Rich & his family, yesterday a.m. Richard was at the front w/3 other cyclists behind, just about 2 miles into what was hoped to be a lovely 40-50 mi. Ride. No dramatic story...he just swerved left &then overcompensated to right, flying down an embankment around 15 ft. He either ran into a large tree or hit at base...but God used his helmet to save his life.(helmet was cracked, & dirt &bark forced into air vents of helmet). At first, Rich thought it was just soft tissue damage, but quickly it was evident it was much more. Rich was about to call 911 but God sent an ems guy (off duty) along the road, who got an ambulance there in 5-10min. The ambulance ride was torturous,I am told.(but a huge blessing:Rich & the other guys escaped injury).
In the ER, trauma docs got tests & x rays going, & soon we learned he has multiple fractures of cervical vertebrae (C1 & C2), and a compression/"burst" fracture of T4. Again by God's grace, No surgery was recommended. The neurosurgeon says the vertebrae should heal over time...using a cervical collar & chest brace for stabilization/immobilization. He spent last night in neurosurg ICU so he could be closely monitored. We are waiting for a regular floor room to come available, hopefully sometime today. He should have his customized chest brace (made in Cape Cod, overnighted) by Tues. Noon. Then the plan is for PT to work w/him on walking. We should then be able to head back to B'ham for his recovery & follow up w/neurosurgeon there , hopefully mid week or a bit later.
Many of you have sent precious caring wishes & promises to pray, and we are so grateful. Please continue to pray for rapid &complete healing, and for no complications to occur. Also, due we think to nasal congestion, maybe swelling near throat, & the uncomfortable but essential cervical collar,Richard has some considerable difficulty breathing easily, & therefore, good, sound rest is hard to come by. Please pray specifically about that. We are truly overwhelmed that, as tough as this scenario is, it could have been SO much worse. Generally pain meds are making the pain mostly manageable. Because of Richard's great fitness/state of health, the doc feels he should heal more quickly than average. Another great blessing! Today he is eating & drinking fairly well...but especially he enjoyed the smoothie Rich made & brought to hospital for him! Very nutritious, containing the "super greens" supplement he likes to use. :)
"Thank you" seems so inadequate a thing to convey the depths of our gratitude for your prayers & support...but please know deeply we mean it. Please be patient if I can't answer or send a quick "thanks" to you...but I'm actively pulling out my old nursing skills from about 35 hrs ago to take care of the beloved husband God spared to me & our family. I thank God that I am privileged to do so.
With much love & gratitude to God,and to you all,
janet
