Give Kids a Smile-GKAS 2012

BDDS Members,

GKAS has had 9 years of tremendous success! Our members have provided dental care for over 1,100 children who would not otherwise have had access to dental care. In 2008 we introduced changes which allowed you to participate in this event from the comfort of your private office. This change has been very successful and we plan to continue and improve on this approach.

This year we need volunteer dentists to commit to seeing patients in their private offices for a cleaning/ screening appointment and one operative visit.

GKAS patients are between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. All volunteer dentists should feel free to specify if they are comfortable seeing children of all ages or ages 8 and up only. Approximately 40% of past GKAS patients have come from our Hispanic community. Translators are available through United Way of Central Alabama if necessary.

If you would like to volunteer for Give Kids A Smile 2012 please call or email at your convenience.

Greer Mentor Program-Council on New Dentist

The Council on the New Dentist has been in charge of the Greer Mentor program in the past. It had gone by the wayside the past few years because of lack of interest from dental students but this year there has been some interest

The idea is that a dentist in the community volunteers to be a mentor for a dental student on a "keep in touch" type basis- no regularly scheduled meetings, but more like an email, give advice, helpful hints and/or come to the office if they want to shadow type of relationship. There are four (4) students interested so far and one who is specifically interested in orthodontics.

If you are willing to serve as a mentor to these students, please contact Dr. Melissa Nix at melissa.nix@gmail.com
