There have been quite a few in recent months that I was not aware of and after doing some research have included them in this issue. This list is for the past six months or so. Thomas Lawson
Oct. 6, 1920 - Jan. 17, 2012 Dr. Thomas Clay Lawson Late Tuesday afternoon, Thomas Clay Lawson, devoted husband and father and an active, involved citizen, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family, dear friend of the church, and his caregiver. Tom was born in Florence, AL and attended local schools. He was always active in his children's activities: PTA, Indian Guides, and many sports. Tom loved people, his family dearly, and loved to promote Huntsville in all areas. In his life, he was a member of the First United Methodist Board and Secretary of the Big Brothers Class. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Naval Air Corps and served on active duty in the Pacific Theater of Operations 1943-1945, a proud Veteran of WWII. In the interim, Tom was engaged in business, and became a Mason and Shriner. He became interested in dentistry and became chairman of Pre-Dental students, who met and worked with Governor Jim Folsom to establish the Alabama Dental School, which would offer a DMD Degree after four years. He was also a member of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity. He graduated in the general practice of dentistry, and enjoyed general practice for two years. In 1960, Tom finished two years of school in a residency in the practice of Orthodontics, moved to Huntsville, and practiced orthodontics for 42 years. In his profession, Tom was a member of local and national dental and orthodontic associations. He was honored by being awarded Life Membership in the Alabama Dental Association and serving on the Executive Committee of the Alabama Dental Alumni Association. Being a dedicated sportsman in both hunting and fishing, Tom had offered his services to the chairmanship of Ducks Unlimited, Madison County. He was State Director of Alabama Wildlife Association and awarded the highest honor of the Alabama Wildlife Association - The Walter Mims Lifetime Achievement Award. The Alabama Department of Conservation and National Resources awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for dedicated support for 12 years. The Alabama Waterfowl Association awarded the Waterfowl Association Service Award. His civic activities and organizations included HIEC Membership Drive, Chamber of Commerce Drive, Boy Scout's Fund-Raising Drive, Advancement Chairman for Boy Scouts of Madison County, Boy's Club Capital Fund Drive, Boy's Club Board of Directors (Secretary) Madison County, Mayor's Committee on Juvenile Delinquency, UGF Fund Drive, YMCA Membership Drive, Space City Lions Club (Secretary), American Red Cross Board of Directors for Madison County, President of Century Club of the University of Alabama, District Director of Alabama Wildlife Federation, 38 years Chairman Water Pollution Committee, Chairman, Ducks Unlimited, Madison County, 1975-1977, Huntsville Utilities Electric Board, Secretary, Vice-Chairman, Chairman, 1976-1994, and Alabama Advisory Board for Conservation and National Resources, 1985-1997. He was given several awards, including one for service on the Huntsville Electorate Utility Board; one from Huntsville Rehabilitation Board; and one from Governor Siegelman for more than 30 years of service to the Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Team. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Anna Margaret Ariail Lawson; twin sons, James Ariail Lawson and wife, Kelly, and their twin girls, Natalie and Ariail, and Thomas Sims Lawson, and wife, Tippi, and their daughter, Anna Lee; stepmother, Miriam Lawson; sister, Elizabeth Lawson Drabkin, half-brother, Sims Lawson; nieces, Jennie and Mary Green Ariail, and Miriam Hirsch; nephews, Thomas M. Ariail, Jr., David, Louis and Joe Drabkin; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow with the Rev. Coy Hallmark and Dr. Glenn Conner officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Laughlin Service Funeral Home is assisting the family. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the service of all of his caregivers, especially Cynthia Tharpe and Beverly Brazelton. DR. EDWARD WHEELDEN STROTHER
STROTHER, DR. EDWARD WHEELDEN Funeral services for Dr. Edward Wheelden Strother, age 84, will be held Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham. Visitation will be in the Elmwood Mausoleum Chapel at 10:00 am followed by a graveside inurnment service at 11:00 am. Dr. Strother was born January 5, 1927 in Decatur and passed away at home in Hartselle on December 30, 2011. He is survived by his daughter Jan Strother Newman (Michael) and his son, Kevin E. Strother (Annette), his sister-in-law Carolyn W. Strother, and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by infant daughter Lisa Lauren Strother, his parents Clarence W. and Lurline W. Strother, and three brothers Robert C. Strother, John C. Strother and Kenneth D. Strother. Dr. Strother attended Riverside High School in Decatur and served in WWII as a Combat Tail Gunner flying B-24 Liberation Bombers for the 15th Air Force in Italy. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force with the rank of Sergeant, Dr. Strother attended Auburn University in pre-dental studies. He was awarded his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry from the University of Alabama, School of Dentistry in Birmingham in 1954. He received a teaching fellowship in UAB's Department of Oral Medicine. He participated in many research projects during this time and helped to develop the first fluoride containing toothpaste. He began his private dental practice in 1956 in the Southside area of Birmingham. He was elected by the ADA to serve as a delegate to the Alabama Legislature. Dr. Strother was the first dentist to be admitted to the staff of Children's Hospital in Birmingham. He became an advocate for safer anesthesia in oral and surgical procedures for children and handicapped young adults. In 1961 Dr. Strother was awarded his law degree upon graduation from Jones Law School in Montgomery. He also served as Chairman of the Board and as Capital Fund Chairman for the Five Points YMCA during 1970-1975. From 1965 until his retirement from dentistry in 1994, Dr. Strother developed and implemented a comprehensive preventative dentistry program within his practice. He was a frequent speaker at dental seminars around the country. Dr. Strother was an avid airplane enthusiast. He enjoyed sharing his passion and knowledge of flying and car racing with family and friends. In addition to cross country flying trips, he flew bi-wing planes, experimental aircraft, gliders, hot air balloons and even made a number of parachute jumps. He and close friend Walter Harkins raced his Sunbeam Alpine sports car at race courses around Alabama in the late 50's and early 60's. Dr. Strother was an active member of the WWII 464th Bomb Group, 779th Squadron, Fifteenth Air Force. He attended many reunions and hosted the reunion event for these special WWII veterans and their families in Huntsville 2010. After retirement, Dr. Strother became a Master Photographer and delighted family and friends by capturing nature, animals and people in beautiful pictures. He was a devoted and loving father. He was also a generous friend, a knowledgeable teacher and an enthusiastic coach to his patients and friends. His presence will be missed by all who knew him. CHARLES WINFIELD "CHARLIE" LEE
LEE, CHARLES "CHARLIE" WINFIELD age 82, of Hoover passed away on the morning of November 14th, 2011. The visitation for family and friends will begin at noon this Thursday, November the 17th, with funeral services starting at 1pm at the Johns-Ridouts Elmwood Chapel. The burial will be at the Elmwood Cemetery, immediately following the services. Charles was preceded in death by a son, Charles Winfield Lee, Jr. and his parents Charles Vernon and Mildred Lucille Hennessey Lee. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Burgdorf Lee, and loving children, Scott David Lee (Stephanie) and Suzanne Michelle Scott (Donald). Step-sons, Charles Alan Newton (Debra); Michael Scott Newton (Wendy) and David Kyle Newton (Bethann); six grandchildren: Chad, Justin, Matthew, Meghan, Maggie and Jay Newton. Charles was a charter member of the Riverchase United Methodist Church, Hoover, AL. He graduated from the following schools: West End High School, Birmingham Southern and the University Of Alabama School Of Dentistry. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Birmingham Southern. Charles served as an Artillery Officer posted to Germany and assigned to the 43rd Infantry Division, a blocking division. He returned to the United States in 1954 and put on Reserve status with the U.S. Army. He retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1982. Charles retired from his Dental Practice in Brookwood, AL. in February 2001. He has been involved in several charities of which being very closely attached to the Big Oak Ranch where he donated his time and expertise in Dental work for the girls. He was a former member of the District Dental Society of Alabama and a member of the Birmingham Genealogical Society, Inc. DR. CHARLES WILLIAM LOKEY Jr.
LOKEY, DR. CHARLES WILLIAM JR., born in Birmingham, Alabama on April 18, 1918, he graduated from Sewanee Military Academy and attended the University of the South, Birmingham Southern College and Auburn University. He received his DDS degree from Emory University. Charles was part of the "Greatest Generation", serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy's 40th Construction Battalion as the battalion's dentist. He accompanied the battalion in 1945 when they landed on Okinawa. He practiced dentistry in Alabama for fifty years. He was instrumental in the formation of the School of Dentistry at the University of Alabama. During this time he served on its first faculty. He was also a member of the staff of the Children's Hospital. He served as President of the Birmingham Dental Society, Alabama Dental Association, Alabama Chapter of Children's Dentistry, and President of the American Association of Dental Insultants. He was a member of the American Dental Association , a fellow of he International College of Dentistry, a Hickman Fellow in the Birmingham Kiwanis Club, a member of the Birmingham Country Club and the Roller's Dog Fight. He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Thuston, her sons Elmer C. Thuston, III, William Lee Thuston, Robert Thuston and their seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Vivian Green and his parents Charles and Bernice Lokey, survived by their children Charles William Lokey, III, his wife Madelyn and their daughter Margaret, and Vivian Tucker and her children Timothy Tucker, Jr. and his wife Catherine, Katherine Tucker, Vivian Tucker, Mallie Tucker and great granddaughter Anne Parrish Tucker. There will be a memorial service at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Tuesday August 23rd at 3:00 pm. Visitation will follow the service in Graham Hall. JOSEPH DOMENICK DOLCE
DOLCE, JOSEPH DOMENICK Visitation for Dr. Joseph Domenick Dolce, age 82, will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham from 5pm to 8pm. A memorial service will be held at South Highland Presbyterian Church in Birmingham at 11am with a visitation starting at 10am on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Dr. Dolce was born May 28, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York and passed away on January 14, 2012. He is survived by his wife Judith Dolce and his sons, Dr. Jeffrey J. Dolce (Mary Jane); Stephen P. Dolce (Maria); grandsons, Nicholas, David (Partner Francine Salas and daughter Lanie), Andrew, and Joseph; brother Robert H. Dolce (Doris); and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Lily Dolce and his brother Frank E. Dolce from Burlington, NJ. Dr. Dolce attended Burlington High School in NJ; University of Alabama; Harvard Medical/ Dental school; and Alabama School of Dentistry. He served as a Captain and Dentist in the United States Air Force then practiced dentistry in Birmingham for 50 years. He was actively involved in the School of Dentistry and had a lifetime fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. He was an active member in the American Dental Association and the Society for Advanced Dentistry. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a generous and gracious friend to many, and also had a deep desire for knowledge and a passion for life. Among his many interests were his love for sailing, horses, sports cars, classical music, and photography. But his greatest passion was flying. Dr. Dolce flew for Angel Wings Transport. He was a member of AOPA, and the Quiet Birdman Association, as well as a pilot, flight instructor, and instrument flight instructor. Throughout his life he enjoyed the company of many dogs and was a member of the Birmingham Kennel Club, the American Kennel Club, the English Setter Kennel Club of America, and Great Dane Kennel Club of America. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice Advantage of Birmingham or the Alabama Alzheimer's Association .

WALTER CULBRETH ANDREWS Jr.
ANDREWS, JR., WALTER CULBRETH age 88, a resident of Destin, FL and formally of Birmingham, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2011. He was born in Ozark, AL and graduated from Ozark High School. He served in the 1st Division U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He graduated from the University of Alabama Dental School (UAB) in 1951, receiving the very first diploma given. He was a member of Mt. Brook Baptist Church. Dr. Andrews was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Andrews. He is survived by his children, Walter C. Andrews, III (Denise), Dr. George Andrews (Kathy), Susan Livolsi (Jack), and Sally Sharp (Allen); grandchildren, Walter C. Andrews IV, Dr. George Andrews, Jr., Bill Andrews, Jennifer Liles, Charlie Andrews, Sarah Kathryn Sharp, Anna Leigh Sharp, and David Livolsi; and nine great grandchildren. There will be a private graveside service held for the family at Elmwood Cemetery. A memorial services will be held at Mt. Brook Baptist Church at 12:30 pm on Thursday, December 29, 2011. DR. CHARLES S. CAUTHEN
CAUTHEN, DR. CHARLES S. Dr. Charles Sidney Cauthen passed away November 14, 2011 at age 83. He was born June 2, 1928 in Gadsden, AL. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty N. Cauthen; his daughter, Charbett Cauthen Fincher; his grandson, Heath Fincher; his sister, Dot Phipps of Gadsden, AL. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Henry Cauthen and Lynn Thornton Cauthen; step mother, Edith D. Cauthen; and brother, Bobby Cauthen. Dr. Cauthen attended Jacksonville State College for one year and graduated from Birmingham Southern College, University of Alabama School of Dentistry. Dr. Cauthen practiced dentistry in the Roebuck area for over fifty years. He was a member of the Alabama Dental Association, American Dental Association. Dr. Cauthen was a veteran of the Korean War. In recent years, Charles took up flying his private plane, fishing, travel and was a vivid reader of world history. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 17 beginning at 11:00 AM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home with Chapel Services at 12:00 PM with Dr. Ron Friday officiating. DR. JOHN HAROLD FENDLEY
FENDLEY, DR. JOHN HAROLD Dr. John Harold Fendley, 86, of Leeds, passed away Thursday, January 12, in Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Monroe and Della Moore Fendley, and his brother, Robert Gene Fendley (Elizabeth). He is survived by his sister, Deanna Fendley Lyerly (Ralph); long-time companion Joanne Powers; nieces Susan Fendley Raughton (James), Alisa Fendley Dollar, Melanie Fendley Lyerly Riley(Ken); nephew, Dr. Ralph Thomas Lyerly, III (Susan) and a number of very special great-nieces and nephews. Born in Oneonta, Alabama, on February 26, 1925, Dr. Fendley graduated from Emory University with a B.S. degree in Biology and Chemistry and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The University of Tennessee Dental School in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Fendley served in the Korean Conflict as Lieutenant in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S Shenandoah. Following his honorable discharge, Dr. Fendley, an oral surgeon, practiced dentistry at The Fendley Dental Clinic in Leeds, Alabama for over forty years. His late brother, Robert "Bob" Fendley, was head of his dental laboratory and his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fendley, was his office manager throughout his career. Dr. Fendley was a long-standing member of Eastlake United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Directors for many years. Visitation will be held at Kilgroe Funeral Home, Leeds on Monday, January 16, from 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 17 at 2:00 P.M. at Kilgroe Funeral Home with burial to follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Long-time friend, Rev. Hillard Vance, will officiate.

DR. ROBERT CHARLES GRAY
GRAY, DR. ROBERT CHARLES Dr. Robert Charles Gray, age 78 of Mountain Brook, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2011 after a brief illness. He was the youngest of eleven children born to the late Bert and Gertrude Gray of Tonkawa, OK. Bob was the beloved husband of the late Jane Westbrook Gray for 57 years, who preceded him in death in September 2011. He is survived by his daughter, Jane Gray Atkinson (Scott), and his son, Robert C. Gray, Jr. His special loves were his four grandchildren, Scott E. Atkinson, Jr., Jane Westbrook Atkinson, Ross Hamill Gray, and Margaret Ellison Gray. He is also survived by his sister, Rosalie Gray O'Brien (Tulsa, OK), his sister-in-law, Ann Westbrook Evans (Mobile AL), his brother-in-law, James Craig Westbrook III (Harriet), and his many nieces and nephews. Dr. Gray enjoyed a long and distinguished career prior to his retirement in 1989 from the University of Alabama Birmingham as chairman of the Department of Periodontics. He joined the faculty of the School of Dentistry in 1963 and was promoted to full professorship in 1974. Among his many accomplishments, he served as president of the Southern Academy of Periodontology in 1980-81, and was a member of the Academy of Periodontology, the Alabama Society of Periodontology, American Dental Association, and the American Association of Dental Schools. Because of Dr. Gray's expertise, he also served as a consultant to the University of Baghdad, The American Dental Association, and the Universidad Francisco in Guatemala City, as well as the Veterans Administration Hospitals in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and other locations across the southeast. He was known for his research activities, was published in several journals, and made presentations before numerous professional groups. Prior to joining UAB, Dr. Gray completed a tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force before returning to Birmingham, where he completed his education in periodontics at the Birmingham Veterans Administration Hospital and residency at the School of Dentistry. Dr. Gray was a native of Marland, Oklahoma and received his predental education at the University of Oklahoma, where he played for the Sooners under legendary coach Bud Wilkinson. He then continued his education at The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, before matriculating in the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, which awarded him the Doctor of Dental Medicine in 1959. Bob and Jane were longtime members of the Country Club of Birmingham, where they enjoyed spending time with their many friends and family, and where he will be sorely missed by his friends from the 19th Hole. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation at 1:00pm followed by a memorial service at 2:00pm on Sunday, December 11, 2011 in the chapel of Canterbury United Methodist Church, 350 Overbrook Road, Mountain Brook, Alabama 35213. The family would also like to thank the medical staff and many caregivers who gave him professional and dedicated care during his final days. Dr. ROBERT N. "DOC" McCLUNG
MCCLUNG, DR. ROBERT N. "DOC", DMD Dr. Robert McClung died of natural causes at his home in Pell City, AL on Nov. 26, 2011 at the age of 78. He was born in Birmingham, Al. on January 10th, 1933 to Dr. Scotty and Martha McClung. Dr. McClung attended the University of Alabama where he received his degree in dentistry. After establishing practices in Birmingham, AL. and Florala, AL he eventually settled down in Pell City, AL where he successfully practiced dentistry for over 30 years. He was a very accomplished golfer winning numerous tournaments throughout his lifetime in Alabama, Georgia and Florida and actually beat Arnold Palmer in an exhibition tournament held at the Birmingham Country Club. His other hobbies included fishing, flying and woodworking. Dr. McClung served in the United States Army from 1953-1961. He was also very active in the Alabama Dental Association until 1997 and taught numerous classes thorough the United States and Canada on advanced prosthetic dental techniques. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Patricia R. McClung, his four children Debbie McClung Carter, Bobby McClung, Scott McClung, Michael McClung as well as seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is best known for his love of life, his generosity and his willingness to always help those in need. A wake will be held on Friday December 2nd at his residence 147 Holiday Estates in Cropwell, Al. between 12:30 and 2:30 pm. All visitors are welcome to attend. |
DR. JOHN ROBERT ORR III
ORR, III, DR. JOHN ROBERT Known to friends and family as "Johnny", passed away the evening of Tues., January 3 after battling lung cancer for five months. He was born October 17, 1953 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was married to Susan Louise Haberstroh on July 30, 1977. He attended the University of Alabama ('75), majored in Biology and Chemistry, and went on to dental ('79) and orthodontic school at UAB ('81). He had a thriving orthodontics practice in Fairfield, Alabama for 29 years, also working in offices in Tuscaloosa and Irondale. Surviving are his wife, Susan Orr, his three children, Elizabeth Orr Jones (Lee), Mary Orr, John Orr and his two sisters, Ginny Green (Mike) and Marie Toffel (Randy) and a large extended family. He is predeceased by his parents, Mary Stone Orr and John Robert Orr Jr. He was a member of the Southern Society of Orthodontists, the AAO, the Exchange Club, ADA, Alabama Dental Society, and numerous other organizations. He was an active member of the Mountaintop Community Church Brannon small group. Johnny will be remembered for his love of golf, Alabama football, fishing, turkey hunting and all lake activities. He grilled a mean steak and barbeque and had a sharp wit, laughing with ease. The funeral will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Rd Pelham, AL 35124, at 12 p.m. Friday, January 6. Visitation begins at 10:30am. Donations can be made in his name to The Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse (2300 10th Court South Birmingham, AL 35205). He became an advocate for safer anesthesia in oral and surgical procedures for children and handicapped young adults. In 1961 Dr. Strother was awarded his law degree upon graduation from Jones Law School in Montgomery. He also served as Chairman of the Board and as Capital Fund Chairman for the Five Points YMCA during 1970-1975. From 1965 until his retirement from dentistry in 1994, Dr. Strother developed and implemented a comprehensive preventative dentistry program within his practice. He was a frequent speaker at dental seminars around the country. Dr. Strother was an avid airplane enthusiast. He enjoyed sharing his passion and knowledge of flying and car racing with family and friends. In addition to cross country flying trips, he flew bi-wing planes, experimental aircraft, gliders, hot air balloons and even made a number of parachute jumps. He and close friend Walter Harkins raced his Sunbeam Alpine sports car at race courses around Alabama in the late 50's and early 60's. Dr. Strother was an active member of the WWII 464th Bomb Group, 779th Squadron, Fifteenth Air Force. He attended many reunions and hosted the reunion event for these special WWII veterans and their families in Huntsville 2010. After retirement, Dr. Strother became a Master Photographer and delighted family and friends by capturing nature, animals and people in beautiful pictures. He was a devoted and loving father. He was also a generous friend, a knowledgeable teacher and an enthusiastic coach to his patients and friends. His presence will be missed by all who knew him.
