Greetings!
Greetings and Salutations,
I hope everyone had a fantastic and relaxing summer season. I cannot believe how fast the previous seven years have flown by. It seems like yesterday, that Dr. Ballard called and asked if I would serve on the Executive Council. Naturally, I agreed to participate. Little did I realize at the time, I was volunteering for nine years of service!
During the first couple of years, I often found myself asking what exactly does this Association do for the average dentist. Beginning with the Dental Board overhaul, the purchase of the new state building, and ending with the 501(c)(3) debate, I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly from our profession.
I found out by experience that our Association is here to protect our profession and that if we can keep from attacking each other, our Association is quite strong and respected. Now that all outside strife has ended, I hope we can concentrate on more pressing items that will benefit and not divide us. I will work to have the Association provide more services to our member dentists during my year as President.
Historically, one of the main stumbling blocks to providing services and benefits for our members has been financial. Our overhead had increased to a point that we were dying a slow painful death. Dr. Kent and Dr. Walker, our previous president and treasurer, attacked the problem head on. They made some very tough and financially sound decisions that have put our society back on solid ground. We will use this footing to put on a great program for our members this year. If you see Drs. Kent and Walker, please thank them for their service to our society.
Our Executive Council has many decisions to make this month. I am excited in the direction we are headed. We should have great news on our program schedule for the year, a unique opportunity for donated services, and a strengthened tie to our Dental School.
Please join us on September 13, for fellowship, food and Continuing Education. We will welcome Dr. Blaine Bishop, who will speak on Osteonecrosis and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
It has been an honor for me to serve on the Executive council, an even greater honor to serve as the Birmingham District Trustee and the ultimate honor to serve as your District President. Should you ever have a problem, please feel free to call me.
