An Announcement!
I'm VERY excited to share the news that the Smithsonian American Art Museum has acquired two video games for its permanent collection: Flower by thatgamecompany and Halo 2600 by Ed Fries. This acquisition builds upon the museum's growing collection of film and media arts and represents an ongoing commitment to the study and preservation of video games as an artistic medium. Here's a link to today's press release with more info (PDF).
But only two, you ask? This is just the beginning, I promise! We know there is a vast world of incredible video game experiences out there, and we look forward to adding more titles in the future.
We selected Flower for its combination of stunning visuals, intuitive and simple controls, and immersive experience. Halo 2600 captured our attention for its innovative "de-make" of a contemporary game for an early platform. Both games are represented in The Art of Video Games exhibition, which is currently on view at the Everson Museum of Art in New York.
