The Civil War and American Art Teacher Guide

A Visit from the Old Mistress by Winslow HomerThis extensive guide features twelve artworks from The Civil War and American Art exhibition that will help students understand the causes and impact of the conflict that divided our nation. The resource includes a timeline that places the artworks into historical context, a guide to reading art as a primary source, detailed information about each featured artwork, discussion questions, related primary source documents, activities, and teacher-created lesson plans.

Oh Freedom! Online Conference

Teaching Civil Rights through Smithsonian Collections

School's Out by Allan Rohan Crite The Oh Freedom! Online Conference explored Civil Rights and Smithsonian collections with curators, experts, and educators in live presentations, interactive demonstrations, and moderated forums on February 6, 2013. Watch the archived conference, explore resources in the Virtual Exhibit Hall, and participate in ongoing discussions. Also be sure to check out the Oh Freedom! website.

How to Create Podcasts with Your Students

Lift Up Thy Voice and Sing by William H. Johnson If you're intrigued by the student podcasts on our website but aren't sure how you could introduce a similar project with your students, you can now use this teacher guide to plan your approach. Podcasting fosters both conventional literacies and 21st century skills while engaging students in the study of art, history, and writing. The guide includes step-by-step advice on designing your project, a suggested pre-lesson to prepare students, and advice from experienced teachers.
