Snow Fields (Winter in the Berkshires) by Rockwell Kent celebrates the beauty of a crisp winter's day after a fresh snowfall. Although a quiet scene, I can almost hear the crunch of footsteps in the snow, the giggle of the baby being swooped into the air, and the energetic barks of the two family dogs. Born in Tarrytown, New York, Kent spent most of his life in and around New York City but found his inspiration in nature, which is clear from Snow Fields. Rather than paint the scene devoid of people, Kent includes them, creating context in this natural landscape. Come see Snow Fields on view on the 2nd Floor, East wing and make the Smithsonian American Art Museum part of your holiday plans!
