APRIL FOAL PATROL

As you know, this is generally a busy time for a thoroughbred nursery, and at Hidden Brook it's no exception. Plenty of beautiful foals were born this month, and we'd like to show you a few of them enjoying some of their earliest moments on the farm.

When did you start working at Hidden Brook?

I have been working at Hidden Brook for almost a year now. I am friends with Coy [Martinez], and when she accepted her new job at Keeneland, she told me how great it is working for Hidden Brook and encouraged me to go for it.

What has been your overall experience with Hidden Brook?

I really enjoy working here. It is such a great team to work for, and it is really interesting to see the guys out there doing their different things every day, and how it all comes together. There is always something going on - foals, sales, racing. And it is beautiful out on the farm!

When did you first become interested in horses?

I have been interested in horses since I was a little kid. I begged my parents to let me take riding lessons through the local park district. Once I started, I was hooked and they couldn't keep me away from the barn.

What is your favorite racetrack to visit?

I grew up going to Monmouth Park with my family. They used to have picnic tables in the grass there at the top of the stretch. I don't know if they changed things around when they hosted the Breeder's Cup, but that's how it used to be laid out. We would go with my grandparents, and would pack subs and snacks and hang out there. All of the kids learned how to bet on the horses when we were young. That was my introduction to horse racing, so I am partial to it there.

What's your favorite horse of all time?

My little quarter horse George is my favorite horse. It's really hard to pick a favorite racehorse... I have been a big fan of Kitten's Joy since he was a three-year-old. He's one of my favorites.

What are some hobbies you enjoying doing in your spare time?

I keep myself pretty busy between running and riding my horses. We foxhunt in the fall and winter, and do more trail riding in the summer.

What is your favorite quote or motto to live by?

As long as it makes for a good story in the end... Even if a situation doesn't turn out exactly how I want it to, if I can look back at it and laugh, it's probably ok.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Finishing a marathon.

What would you do if you weren't in the horse business?

I studied marketing in college, so maybe something to do with that.

What is something that is guaranteed to make you laugh?

Whenever I talk about racehorses with my dad, somehow we end up watching old videos of human track stars from the past on YouTube, and he compares their running styles to the horses. He has probably shown me the video of Dave Wottle winning the 800m in the 1972 Olympics about fifty times now. As it turns out, he does run just like Zenyatta. How can you not laugh at that?

What talent would you most like to have?

I would like to have some sort of artistic talent, maybe photography.

Do you cheer for any sports teams? Which teams?

It's hard not to cheer for UK basketball around here, but I am not insane about it!

What are some of your favorite movies?

Any older Adam Sandler movies. Fight Club. Ever After. How's that for variety?
