KEENELAND NOVEMBER

It only took eight of eleven sessions for the Keeneland November Sale's total earnings to surpass its 2013 numbers, while both the average and median prices increased by 8.8 and 8.5 percent, respectively.

With the market continuing to gain momentum, Hidden Brook's consignment followed suit, selling 37 of 40 horses offered with total receipts of $2,171,200 and an exceptional 92.5% clearance rate.

As reported by Bloodhorse, Hidden Brook had the highest average selling price on the fourth day of the sale, with three lots selling for an average of $178,333 each.

We would like to thank all of our owners and purchasers, as well as all of the Hidden Brook team who helped run our consignment. We are endlessly grateful to have such a passionate and hard-working group of people on our side.

PIANIST PARTNERSHIP COMES TO AN END

As the saying goes: "All good things must come to an end".  With the selling of Pianist at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, a memorable and successful racing partnership has come to a close.

Hidden Brook purchased Pianist as a yearling during the 2010 Keeneland September sale. The chestnut filly, by More Than Ready and out of Red Piano, sold for $100,000.

It was a sign of good things to come when, in her first career race as a two year old, she came in a hard-fought 2nd, losing by just a nose. She would win her second start, this time as a three year old, by a decisive and expanding 5 ½ lengths, finishing the one mile race on turf in an impressive 1:33.65.

Trained by Chad Brown, Pianist went on to win three of her first five races, the last of those wins being her first career stakes win in the Given Stakes at Belmont Park, where she once again won by a commanding 5 ½ lengths.

On May 18, 2013, at Pimlico-Preakness Day-Pianist won the $150,000 G3 Gallorette Handicap by 2 ¾ lengths, beating a lineup of horses that included three G1 winners-Hard Not to Like, Old Tune, and Samitar.

Pianist finished the one and one-sixteenth of a mile race on turf in 1:40.60, just a tick off the track record of 1:40.32.

Following this victory, Pianist would finish in-the-money in three consecutive stakes races. First, she finished 3rd in the $250,000 G3 Dr. James Penny Memorial Handicap, followed by a 2nd place finish in the $250,000 G2 Ketel One Ballston Spa Stakes, losing by a neck while beating out G1 winners such as Centre Court and Samali Lemonade.

On October 12, 2013, Pianist won the $200,000 G3 Athenian Stakes at Belmont Park by 2 lengths, finishing the one and one-sixteenth of a mile race on turf in 1:39.94, improving on her time in the Gallorette.

Pianist would finish her career with a record of 15-6-2-3, becoming one of the best of her division in 2013, with lifetime earnings of over $500,000.

At the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, Hidden Brook sold Pianist to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings for $425,000.

We would like to thank everyone involved in Pianist's success, and we wish Pianist the best of luck as a broodmare and thank her for letting us witness her exciting career.

Merry Meadow

Merry Meadow won her second stakes race of the year in the Sky Beauty Stakes at Gulfstream Park West on November 1st, marking her second stakes win of 2014. She previously won the G3 Vagrancy Handicap at Belmont Park in May.

In addition to these two victories, the four-year-old finished 2nd in the G3 Bed o' Roses Handicap back in June, and 3rd in G2 Honorable Miss Handicap in July. Her overall record in 2014 is 7-3-1-1, with earnings totaling $256,970.

By Henny Hughes and out of Merryland Monroe, Merry Meadow was born and raised at Hidden Brook and was bred by David Howe and William Parsons.

She won the Sky Beauty Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths, finishing the six furlong contest in 1:11 and change.

Just one month after her victory in the G2 Matron Stakes at Belmont Park, Paulassilverlining came in 2nd in the G3 Tempted Stakes at Aqueduct, finishing strong in the one mile contest on dirt.

The two-year-old filly improved her record to 4-2-1-0, earning $223,950 in her first four races.

By Ghostzapper and out of Seeking the Silver, Paulasilverlining

was foaled and raised at Hidden Brook for breeder and owner Vince Scuderi.

Happy My Way

Having already nabbed two stakes wins and one stakes placed (G1) in 2014, the four-year-old Happy My Way finished 2nd in the $350,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes at Laurel Park on November 15th.

His record in 2014 is 7-3-3-0, with a career record of 18-6-4-2 and earnings over $500,000.

By Wilko, out of Holy Queen, Happy My Way was purchased by Hidden Brook as a two year old in May of 2012 for owner Mel Paikoff.

Sandra, who was raised at Hidden Brook for Empire Equines, finished 2nd in the Key Cents Stakes at Aqueduct on November 16th, bringing her record to 4-1-1-0 as a two-year old.

She is by Bluegrass Cat and out of Majestically. She is the 44th Hidden Brook graduate to earn black type in 2014. Finnegans Wake, who was raised at Hidden Brook for breeder Jerry Crawford, finished 1st in the G2 Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes on November 27th at Del Mar.

He finished the 1 ½ mile race on turf in 2:27.35, marking a new track record.

The win added $150,000 to his bankroll, which now totals $825,375.

This marks his second stakes win of 2014, having previously won the G3 Arlington Handicap back in July.

INSIDE THE WINNERS CIRCLE
Chris Brothers

- Grew up in Breezy Point, NY, a suburb of Queens.

- Moved to Lexington when he was 18.

- Has a wife, Emily, and two daughters, Adelyn (3 years),

  and Cecelia (4 months).

- Founder of Xavier International Bloodstock, LLC.

When did you first become interested in horse racing?

Probably when I was just a little kid. We were living in Queens and my dad used to take me to Belmont and Aqueduct, and some summers we would go up to Saratoga.

How did you get into bloodstock work?

Well, I started at Hidden Brook. I worked my way up from the bottom doing maintenance and taking care of the horses. Eventually I got into the sales side of it and once that happened I got exposed to bloodstock work and really fell in love with that part of the business.

Tell me a bit about the beginning of your company - Xavier International Bloodstock.

I was working for a different sales company and just decided it was the right time to do my own thing. I had a good group of clients that were really supportive of my decision to start my own company, and that's really what drove me to continue on with it. I always wanted to go out on my own, and they kind of gave me the final push that I needed. It was something I would have done down the road anyway, so I figured I might as well go for it sooner rather than later.

What is your own personal most exciting moment in racing so far?

Probably Big Brown's Derby win. I worked for Hidden Brook at the time, and that was the first Derby I ever went to. Also, it was pretty cool standing in the winner's circle with my dad.

What's the most difficult thing about your job?

Dealing with different types of people and a variety of personalities, and trying to keep each one of them happy.

Describe a typical work day for you.

On a non-sales day, I take my daughters to school and then go to the office. Usually I'm in the office the majority of the day if I don't have to go look at horses. A lot of phone calls, a lot of emails. Mostly just pushing paper.

You have two daughters - a three year old and a four-month old. How does having young kids change the way you work?

It's really a double-edged sword. It makes you work harder but it also makes you not want to work as much. You want to work harder to provide for them and secure their future but at the same time you want to work less and hang out with them more.

What do you think makes Hidden Brook tick?

I think all the guys have great opinions that really benefit their clients, especially when it comes to selling. Me and my clients sell our horses with Hidden Brook and you get a lot of great ideas, which makes it easier to form a game plan on selling your horse. On the farm they do a great job, too. We board our horses and our client's horses there. There's just a lot of very open communication, there's no gray area, and it just is what it is.

What is your favorite racetrack to visit?

I'd have to say Saratoga. I do love Belmont, just because of certain memories I've had there. It has some nostalgic value, for sure. Still to this day, every time I'm at Belmont I have to have a chocolate milk. But I'd still say Saratoga because of the history and the beauty.

What's your favorite horse of all time?

Growing up, I loved watching movies and reading stories about Secretariat. Although Ghostzapper would be a close second.

Favorite movies and TV shows?

For movies: The Da Vinci Code, Goodfellas, and The Mighty Ducks. TV shows would have to be Seinfeld, Bizarre Foods, and The Office.

Favorite Sports and Teams?

Hockey would be number one-the New York Rangers. Second would be pro football and the New York Giants.

Favorite Hobbies?

Spending time with my family, golfing, woodworking, and any activity that warrants an ice cold beer.

Favorite quote or motto to live by?

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretzky

What advice would you have for someone who wants to break into the horse business?

Do your homework. Make a plan. Don't just go in flying by the seat of your pants. Do your homework on who to get involved with and who to trust.

Thank you, Chris Brothers, for giving up a few minutes of your time Inside the Winner's Circle.
