HIDDEN BROOK HITS MILESTONE
100TH STAKES WINNER

The Hidden Brook program reached a milestone on August 4th, when the Mike McCarty-owned/Steve Asmussen-trained colt Street Prancer shipped to Canada and scored a decisive win in the $75,000 Manitoba Derby. By Street Sense out of Lightfoot Lane, 3-year-old Street Prancer was foaled and raised at Hidden Brook, who bred the colt along with Jonathan Mills and Darley.

In winning the 66th running of the historic Manitoba Derby, the handsome bay became the 100th stakes winner directly associated with the Hidden Brook program.

Street Prancer joins the ranks of prominent Hidden Brook alumni Dad's Caps, Discreet Cat, Discreetly Mine, Awesome Maria, Musket Man, Backseat Rhythm, Rose Catherine, Pianist, Starship Truffles, Musket Man and dual classic winner Big Brown. This year alone, Hidden Brook has accounted for 35 Stakes Horses, 20 Graded Stakes Horses, 17 Stakes Winners and 10 Graded Stakes Winners-including two Grade I winners.

"We are extremely proud of the success of the horses that have come through our program," said Hidden Brook partner Sergio de Sousa. "We have to thank our strong base of loyal clientele that have afforded us the opportunity to build a winning program - we are truly partners in every sense of the word."

HIDDEN BROOK PRESENTS STRONG KEENELAND SEPTEMBER LINEUP

Coming fresh off the heals of their 100th stakes winning horse, Hidden Brook hopes to sell several more eventual winners at the upcoming Keeneland September sale with an offering of 62 colts and 32 fillies in this year's batch, bringing Hidden Brook's consignment total to 94 yearlings.

The sale will take place over thirteen days, from Monday, September 8, through Sunday, September 21, with Hidden Brook's consignment shifting between barns 14, 39, and 48.

Included in Hidden Brook's promising lineup are yearlings by several top-tier sires of 2014, such as Candy Ride, Giant's Causeway, Lemon Drop Kid, City Zip, Bernardini, Malibu Moon, and Ghostzapper, as well as the current first-crop money earner, Super Saver, and the current second-crop money earner, Pioneer of the Nile.

Other high-earning sires represented in Hidden Brook's roster include Tale of the Cat, More Than Ready, Street Cry, English Channel, Old Fashioned, Dunkirk, Street Boss, Broken Vow, Exchange Rate, Old Fashioned, Midnight Lute, Awesome Again, and Big Brown.

"We're gearing up for a very big sale, and we're hoping the market stays strong," said Hidden Brook managing partner Sergio De Sousa. "We're looking forward to it."

The Hidden Brook team will also be looking to purchase horses at the sale. If anyone is interested in joining a Hidden Brook Racing Partnership, or would like to be involved in any yearling to two-year-old pinhooking ventures, please contact Dan Hall.

HIDDEN BROOK GRADUATES IN AUGUST

In addition to Street Prancer's milestone victory in the August 4 Manitoba Derby, other Hidden Brook graduates began paving the way for future milestones with a pair of additional stakes wins and some strong starts all around.

Balooga Bull
Balooga Bull, fresh off a stakes win on July 16, won his August 4 start in the R.J. Speers Stakes, marking the five-year-old's fifteenth win in twenty career starts, for a lifetime record of 20-15-3-1.

Hidden Brook sold Balooga Bull as a yearling in October of 2010 for breeders Michelle Vertuca and Bernard Vertuca.

Weekend Hideaway added a fourth career stakes win to his résumé with a victory in the John Morrissey Stakes at Saratoga on August 15, bringing his record to 16-6-3-3. He finished the 6 ½ furlong race on dirt in 1:15.83, two lengths ahead of the pack.

Happy My Way

The four-year-old colt was sold by Hidden Brook for breeder Flying Zee Stables as a yearling for $40,000.

Coming off back-to-back stakes wins, including a victory in the G3 Maryland Sprint Handicap this past May, Happy My Way finished a close second-place in the G1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap on August 2, losing by just one length in the 6 furlong race and adding $70,000 to his bankroll.

By Wilko and out of Holy Queen, Happy My Way was purchased by Hidden Brook in May of 2012 for owner Mel Paikoff.

HIDDEN BROOK PARTNERSHIP FILLY PIANIST SETTLES INTO RETIREMENT

Pianist's August 2nd race at Saratoga, where she finished 3rd in the Fasig-Tipton De La Rose Stakes, will end up being her last race as the owners and trainer Chad Brown decided it was best if she retired.

The five-year-old was purchased by Hidden Brook as a yearling for $100,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September Sale, and has gone on to be a multiple G3 stakes winner and G2 stakes placed.

She earned a 98 Beyer and a 6 ¾ Ragozin # while winning the G3 Athenia Stakes at Belmont, finishing the 1 and 1/16 mile race in 1:39 and change.  While competing at the highest levels, she compiled a record of 15-6-2-1.

"She gave us a lot of thrills and excitement over the last four years, racing against the best of her division and earning over $500,000," said Hidden Brook partner Dan Hall.

Pianist is currently enjoying some turn out time at Hidden Brook as the team prepares her to be sold as a broodmare prospect at the Fasig Tipton November Sale.

Her two-year-old half sister, Sunday Sonnet, gained black type on August 27 after finishing 2nd in the $100,000 P.G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga in only her third career start.

HIDDEN BROOK SUCCESS AT FASIG-TIPTON NY BRED SALE IN SARATOGA

Hidden Brook managed to sell all seven of their offerings during this year's New York Bred Preferred Yearlings Sale with an average sales price of $97,429, well above the sale average of $80,258.

The seven horses in their consignment sold for a total of $682,000, but simply selling one-hundred percent of their offerings in a market generally marked by a high percentage of RNA's is an accomplishment in itself.

Hidden Brook's highest seller of the day was a filly by the current first-crop money earner Super Saver that sold for $190,000. Other highlights included final price tags of $150,000, $125,000, and $85,000.

PARTNER PROFILE... Sergio De Sousa

Our clients have been very generous in sharing their

lives with us during our "Inside the Winner's Circle"

Q&A's for many newsletters now, and we figured it's

time for the owners to return the favor. With the

"Partner Profile" questionnaire, the Hidden Brook

partners will answer a wide range of questions not

necessarily pertaining to the horse business, with the hopes

that we can catch a glimpse into their personalities and life

outside of the office.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Get home at the end of an uneventful day, see my family, ride my horses and go to bed.

What talent would you most like to have?

I just take whatever I have been given and don't look back.

What is your current state of mind?

Go with the flow, do the best I can. That's all I can do.

Did you have any odd jobs growing up?

No job is odd. You need to do what you need to do at that particular time.

What is your favorite quote or motto to live by?

It is what it is. Get to the point.

What is your greatest luxury?

Eating three times a day.

What are some of your hobbies?

Horseback riding. I actually enjoy riding difficult horses, but as I get older I avoid the really mad

ones.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My family.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

I'm sure there are many, but I am happy with myself. I'll let others worry about that, I am sure some people appreciate how I am, some don't! But isn't it that way for everyone?

What would you do if you weren't in the horse business?

I have no idea.

What is something that is guaranteed to make you laugh?

I try to find humor in many things. It depends on the situation and moment.

What makes Hidden Brook tick?

We have all had success in the horse industry at the highest level, and we try to get back there as many times as we can through our knowledge and luck (not easy!).

What was your first job in the horse business?

Started from the bottom. Groom, etc. I am proud of that.

What are some of your favorite movies?

Will get back to you on that. Maybe one that has not come out yet.

What are some of your favorite books?

Same as movies.

What's your favorite thing about the horse business?

I have to say my favorite thing are the horses. That's what made me start in it. Obviously without good clients and other interesting  people you meet  in the industry, I would not be able to be in this business. There is nothing like seeing a horse that you raised win and be successful as a race horse, broodmare, stallion, riding horse or whatever their carrier will be, achieving success when your clients achieve their goal either at the race track or at the sales.
