"We have a pretty uniform group of horses," said Hidden Brook partner Sergio de Sousa. "All of them are very athletic, and we think they'll definitely draw a lot of good attention from buyers."

HIDDEN BROOK SUCCESS IN JUNE

Catch My Drift, a Hidden Brook racing partnership filly, won her first career start on June 8 by ¾ of a length, adding $26,400 to her bankroll. Trained by Chad Brown, the three-year-old overcame a slow start, moved to the rail, and steadily improved her position before taking the lead in the deep stretch and holding on for the win.

She is by the multiple graded stakes winner Pioneer of the Nile, whose resume includes victories in the G1 Santa Anita Derby, G2 San Felipe Stakes, G1 CashCall Futurity, and a second-place finish in the 2009 Kentucky Derby.

Hidden Brook purchased Catch My Drift as a yearling for $95,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September sale. She was bred by Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding.

Purchased by Hidden Brook as a two-year-old at the 2012 April Ocala Breeder's Sale, Handoverthecat won a six-furlong race on June 30 by 1 ¼ lengths, finishing on the all-weather track with a respectable final time of 1:10.21. The win improved her record to 4-2-0-0.

Handoverthecat rallied in the stretch three wide, closed in on the leaders and began drawing clear late in the race, sealing the victory and adding $21,600 to her earnings. She is owned by Hidden Brook farm and Dan Zucker.

Through June 30th, Hidden Brook racing partnership horses are winning at a 20% rate, and the Hidden Brook team will soon be looking to purchase yearlings for future partnership opportunities. If you're interested in joining a partnership, or have any questions, please contact Dan Hall (859-621-0526) or any of the Hidden Brook partners.

HIDDEN BROOK GRADS IN JUNE

Lynx, bred by Jim McAlpine and Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, was sold by Hidden Brook as a yearling at the 2012 Keeneland September sale. On June 15 at Monmouth Park, he made his stakes race debut in the G3 Pegasus Stakes, finishing in third place.

Coming off an impressive win during the May 17 Vagrancy Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park, Merry Meadow just missed out on victory in the Bed o' Roses Handicap (G3) on June 21, finishing in 2nd place, just a nose off the leader.

Merry Meadow, who was born and raised on Hidden Brook and bred by David Howe and William Parsons, has now earned $458,600 in her career after adding $30,000 to her bankroll at the Bed o' Roses.

Mr. Ninja, who was foaled and raised on Hidden Brook, came in 3rd in the G1 Pr. Jockey Club Del Peru on dirt. Hidden Brook sold Mr. Ninja at the 2012 Keeneland September Sale. By multiple graded stakes winner Cowboy Cal, the three-year-old was bred by John H. Adger.

On June 21, True Thought finished 3rd in the Ky Alta Handicap, bringing his lifetime record to 6-3-0-2. He was bred by Danny and Donna Brown and sold for them by Hidden Brook as a yearling at the 2012 Keeneland September sale.

PARTNER PROFILE...
Jack Brothers

Our clients have been very generous in sharing their lives with us during our "Inside the Winner's Circle" Q&A's for many newsletters now, and we figured it's time for the owners to return the favor. With the "Partner Profile" questionnaire, the Hidden Brook partners will answer a wide range of questions not necessarily pertaining to the horse business, with the hopes that we can catch a glimpse into their personalities and life outside of the office.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Not sure there is such a thing--but low-key, quiet, family and friends would be a few of the ingredients.

What talent would you most like to have?

I'm determined to learn to play the piano. I've actually taken a few lessons.

What is your current state of mind?

I'm notoriously anxious--but all-in-all: very content.

Did you have any odd jobs growing up?

As a teenager I was a mechanic in a bowling alley. To this day, whenever my bowling ball gets stuck, I still get the urge to go back there and fix it myself.

What is your favorite quote or motto to live by?

"Keep breathing. Tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?"

What historical figure do you most identify with?

I have always admired Benjamin Franklin. We share similar passions: conservation and beer.

What is your greatest luxury?

My iPad. I never leave home without it. Although I have some cool tools that I'm very fond of. I'm a serial renovator--the projects never end.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Graduating from Catholic grammar school in relatively one piece.

How would you like to die?

Not a thought I've ever been infatuated with, but since it's an appointment we all have to keep, rooting home a timely winner at Saratoga -- surrounded by my loved ones.  In the distant future of course.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

Impatience. Next question please.

What would you do if you weren't in the horse business?

Hard to imagine, but likely something agricultural or environmental. Or a rock star.

So, you pretty recently became a grandfather. In two words, how would you describe grandfather-hood?

Exponential joy.

What is something that is guaranteed to make you laugh?

I cannot help laughing when somebody slips, trips, or falls -- myself included. I don't necessarily revel in the misery of others, but I just can't help it for that fleeting moment.

What makes Hidden Brook tick?

Our collective effort. I'm proud of our team approach and chemistry. We aren't just business partners, we're close friends. Like any partnership, we have our differences, but at the end of the day we are able to put them behind us and still go have a beer together. We even vacation together.

What was your first job in the horse business?

The summer I turned 16, I went up to Saratoga and walked hots in the morning, and sold hotdogs at the races in the afternoon at Harry M. Stevens.

What are some of your favorite movies?

Casablanca will always be the consummate film in my book. And anything from Wes Anderson or the Coen brothers. Quirky and dark have a lot of appeal to me.

What are some of your favorite books?

Recently, anything written by Erik Larson (Isaac's Storm, Devil in the White City).  He's fueled my current interest in historical novels.

What's your favorite thing about the horse business?

The constant change -- it never stagnates. The potential rags-to-riches, Cinderella stories are what keep us going as an industry.
