53 Stakes Horses, 11% of TDN Rising Stars
 | |
Game On Dude - 2012's only 5-time Graded SW on the main track
|
It has been a banner year on the track for the Hidden Brook program. Statistics compiled through December 31 show that 53 stakes horses were produced for clients by the Hidden Brook team.
On December 1st alone, three Hidden Brook graduates--Game On Dude, Parent's Honor and StarshipTruffles--won stakes

races valued at $242,000, $200,000, and $100,000. Outstanding performances like this all year long propelled Hidden Brook to its best overall on-track season in history: 26 stakes winners, 19 Graded stakes, 53 stakes performers, 50 blacktype horses, either foaled, raised, sold, purchased, and/or raced by the team. A complete listing of these horses and their connections appears on the left side of the Newsletter.
In addition, in yet another elite category, Hidden Brook produced 11% (four of 38) of the North American runners selected as "Rising Stars" by the Thoroughbred Daily News. The TDN Rising Star designation, bestowed upon horses very early in their careers, has become a valued barometer of future high-level success. Our TDN Rising Stars for 2012 are: Cigar Street, Darwin, Street Life, and Z Big Apple. It goes without saying that we could not have achieved these levels of success without our great friends and clients. Thank you all, and here's to an even greater 2013.

The Good Life
Racing Partnerships Excel in 2012
Major stakes winners at all three NYRA tracks--Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga--and a top contender in the Classic $1,000,000 Belmont Stakes (G1) were key highlights of 2012 for Hidden Brook racing partnerships. From just 13 starters, with an average purchase price of $56,000, we posted combined racetrack and sales proceeds of $1,334,952. Even more impressive, Hidden Brook partnerships significantly out-performed industry averages on nearly all levels, including earning double the amount per start, and winning stakes at a 60% higher clip than the average North American runner. Specific high points of our 2012 partnerships include:

Inside the WINNER'S CIRCLE
with David Wade
A popular feature for The HIDDEN BROOK TIMES is a Q&A with some of our valued clients. David Wade, manager of Richard Golden's Sycamore Hall Farm for 25 years, has been a Hidden Brook client since 2008. At the dawn of the New Year, David (pictured in San Juan, alongside his wife Maureen), was kind enough to offer some thoughts on the Thoroughbred industry and on life.
Born: Savage, MD Residence: Chesapeake City, MD Family: Married 27 years. Wife, Maureen. Daughter, Kristin (25). Son, Steve (22). Education: University of Maryland (Go Terps!) Primary business: Manager, Sycamore HallThoroughbreds, LLC Director of Sales, Northview Stallion Station
New Year's eve is rapidly approaching, so let's jump right in. What got you started in the Thoroughbred industry? I didn't come from a horse-oriented family. I started mucking stalls at a hunter/jumper barn when I was in college. I think it was a shock when I called my parents and said I was changing my major from engineering. After graduation, I was serving as best man at a friend's wedding and happened to meet Jim Ryan in the men's room of all places. A couple weeks later, I began working at his Ryehill Farm, which was my first experience with quality Thoroughbreds. After a few years there, I applied with Richard Golden to manage a farm he was building in Chesapeake City and I've been here ever since.
What drew you to Hidden Brook? I met Sergio back in the 90's when he was working for Steve Johnson at Margaux. I liked him as a person and he impressed me as a horseman. We kept in touch over the years and there came a time that Mr. Golden and I decided Hidden Brook would best serve our needs.
What primary function does Hidden Brook serve for Sycamore Hall? Hidden Brook boards our mares who are booked to Kentucky stallions. Once they are confirmed 60 days in foal, they come back here. Mr. Golden has about 25 mares, and most of them foal here, but a few foal at Northview PA each year. Dan and Mike also come out several times a year to evaluate our yearlings, and we then point them toward what we decide is the most appropriate sale. Mr. Golden will keep 3 or 4 each year to race.
How has the Hidden Brook experience, the team, been different for you than any other experience? There are a lot of farms and Thoroughbred services out there, and many do one or two things well. Some try to do too many things. Hidden Brook has a diverse group of partners that each has a different area of expertise. In each facet of the industry they are involved in, they have the knowledge and talent to do it right. And the communication is outstanding. Each member of the team is personable and it's especially nice dealing with people who give sound advice but don't have egos. There's no place in this industry for arrogance. As soon as you profess to know something about this business, some horse will come along and kick your soapbox out from under you.
Tell us about your own personal most exciting moment in racing. Watching Mr. Golden's filly, Tenski, win the Queen Elizabeth II (G1) at Keeneland was thrilling. Also, this one wasn't a moment, but watching a horse I had bred, Celestial Legend, go undefeated in her first six starts was really cool.
What advice would you have for others who want to get in the game? Have fun, surround yourself with honest, knowledgeable people who you also like personally. And, be realistic with your goals - dreams are great, but goals are things that should be attainable or you'll get discouraged very quickly.
Favorite racetrack? Saratoga. If you're involved with a horse that's running there, you've done something right.
Favorite people to celebrate a race with? If you're celebrating a race, everyone is your best friend.
What is the first thing you read in the morning? The expression on my wife's face. It tells me what kind of day I'm about to have....I hope she doesn't read this.
Favorite sports team? Seriously? The Baltimore Ravens! Isn't that everyone's favorite team?
Favorite place to eat and favorite meal? Home, and anything off the grill. We grill year 'round.
Favorite quote or credo? Proverbs 3:5-7. Look it up.
Best advice you ever got from someone? Do the right thing. You spend a lifetime building your reputation, but it only take a single act to destroy it.
Final word for our readers? If you are currently doing business with Hidden Brook, you are already ahead of the game. If you aren't, give them a try. You'll not only benefit from their knowledge and expertise, you'll establish some new friendships.
Thank you David Wade, for giving us a few minutes of your time inside the Winner's Circle.
