PAUL'S  NOTES:
Buttonbush with friend

  • I visited Skytop Lodge to do a cooking segment but also to checkout their new butterfly house that will open shortly. The butterfly portion is on WNEP's Home and backyard this Saturday at 9am
  • Summer pollinators Part 2 We have a special display of those plants that attract and feed the pollinators mid summer. Honey bees and other insects and birds need to build up strength for over wintering or migration. Making sure your garden is full of mid summer flowers is one way of helping! I have written a special sheet on Summer pollinators. It will also help bring beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden  Summer Pollinator
  • Any of the plants mention on the sheet are on sale this week( see below)
  • Dog Days...90 degree days only good for mad dogs and Englishmen! With that in mind we have been busy trimming back stuff. Above 85%, most plants are not happy and with high humidity it only makes matters worse. We trim back the foliage on our potted plants to save drying out and to stimulate growth in a couple of weeks when the temps drop. The rain was most welcome

GARDEN CENTER
How fresh and cool Hibiscus 'White Chiffon' crystal white flowers look in the garden now.

The rudbeckia table is full of color, and with varieties like 'Goldstrum', 'Henry Eilers', 'Triloba', 'Indian Summer', 'Autumn Sun' and 'Herbstone', you have a lot to choose from.
If rudbeckia is allowed to drop its seeds, you will have a mass of color in just a few years!

Hibiscus shrubs or rose-of-sharon, are all flowering now. We have several varieties like 'Diana', 'Blue Satin', the variegated 'Sugar Tip', and 'Aphrodite'.

We have several of the elusive 'Gold Rush' metasequoia available for sale.
Its difficult to keep plants in containers looking good, but our shade
trees are defying the heat. In temperatures this high, under a
shade tree is the only place that's cool outside. Our collection of maple trees will provide shade quickly along with locust, willow, and more.

GARDEN SHOP
We have a large selection of statuary all made in Pennsylvania.

Garden Spinners are strangely mesmerizing and we have a very good selection right now. These are very well made and come in a variety of finishes Some look like flowers or leaves! They add  movement to a garden and I think, look particulary nice among ornamental grasses.
Check out all of our garden spinners. Hopefully, I'll have them all unpacked this weekend.

SUSAN'S GARDEN

The cool blue leaves of the macleaya poppy is quite eye-catching.

The hot temperatures haven't been kind to some of my daylilies. The foliage is in taters and the flowers are done, so I've cut them back to the ground. 'Rosy Returns'
Caryopteris is in flower and the bees just love it.
is so far, my best repeat blooming daylily. I wish it had larger and taller flowers. The second and third round of flowers tend to be lower and almost tucked in the leaves. I'm going to apply a granular fertilizer to the roots to give them an extra boost.
With all the rain, my boxwood have put out a flush of new growth. I usually don't prune them this late in the season
