PAUL'S  NOTES:
Buttonbush with friend

  • Our swamp hibiscus in full flower at the moment.. amazing flowers
  • We have kept our perennial selection looking  good through the drought. Still, the much needed rain perked everything up.
  •  List of Summer Pollinators click here
  • We have been busy at the garden center tidying up our displays making sure that all our plants receive the correct amount of sunlight. A little summer pruning can help share the love!
  •  Remember to leave the grass(lawn) at least 3" long. I have seen too many lawns where the lawn service has cut the grass way too short. The grass scotches and goes into dormancy. It may look terrible for weeks now..

GARDEN CENTER
Hummingbird hawk moths are particularly attracted to Buddleia or butterfly bushes.

Eupatorium or Joe-Pye-weed needs alot of space in the garden and prefers a moist soil.
If you're interested in attracting pollinators like bees, wasps, butterflies and hawk moths, its important to have flowering plants available throughout the summer and into fall when insects and birds store reserves. Since our garden style is about four seasons of interest, summer and fall are just another opportunity for foliage and flowers. But for pollinators, plants like violets in spring to asters in the fall, you need to think of the whole growing season.
Liatris is a fuzzy bottlebrush of individual flowers.
This time of year, plants that are flowering include, coneflowers, black-eyed-Susans, liatris, butterfly weed, asters, helenium, helianthus, hibiscus, phlox, stokesia, heuchera, clethra, spirea, potentilla, roses, and cephalanthus.
The cup plant has pockets between the leaves and the stem where water collects and forms a natural drinking pool for insects and birds.

If you want to attract hummingbirds to your garden include plants like fuschia, honeysuckle, trumpet vine, weigela, columbine, heuchera, hibiscus, kniphofia, lobelia, monarda, penstemon and salvia.

This is just one of the many types of sedum and all are great pollinator lures.

Creeping thyme forms a carpet covered entirely in flowers which bees love.

SUSAN'S GARDEN

Rudbeckia 'Indian Summer' is colorful, long blooming and provides nectar and seeds for birds later in the season.

The heavy rains caused many plants to collapse. The variegated grasses are always the first to go. If I'm patient enough, I'll try to cut the stems above a leaf. so the blades don't look chopped off. Sturdy plant supports can push smaller grasses up but you have to do it quickly before the plant starts reaching for the sun and the growth becomes distorted. This happens very quickly, usually within two days. Cutting off the older coneflowers wil lighten the load and help plants stay upright.  I've begun shearing off the tops of coreopsis to remove the old flower heads. It can be tricky since new buds are coming up, so you may have to sacrifice some.

The new allium bloom longer, have stronger stems, and larger flower heads.

If you haven't pinched back your annuals, and they've begun to look leggy,
Hummingbirds love vines and trumpet and honeysuckle are two great plants to entice them to your garden.
now is the time. Some annuals like plectranthus, sweet potato vine, helicrysum, and some of the newer petunias tend to more aggressive and can take over a planting, quickly smothering out other better behaved annuals. If a trailing plant has dried out, you'll have to cut back to green growth. They will quickly rebound, as long as you step up with the watering.
