A new shade garden on the campus .
Wednesday. The campus is a wonderful ornamental garden and arboretum. It's well worth a visit if you are passing by. It is just off 476 before it meets 1-95. The arboretum office is surrounded by some amazing plantings .

  • A 'flying" visit to NYC allowed me to visit the much loved Highline Garden.

  • On Monday July 04, Paul will be here at the garden center from 9-12 am, so if you want to listen to him bemoaning this holiday, feel free to visit and torture him! (Susan's Note)

GARDEN CENTER
The daylilies are beginning to flower and many more are in bud. most are big full buds that will provide weeks of color this year. 'Rhythmn & Hues', 'Flamingo Fantasy', and 'Romantic Returns' are just a few. many are tri-colored with different throat and ring colors. These are not colors you see in everyone elses gardens. Stokesia and stachys byzantine are flowering along with monarda, lupines, and goldenrod. We have several varieties of coreopsis including rosea, 'Zagreb', 'Curry Up', and 'Heaven's Gate. 'Millenium' and 'Mt. Sinai' allium have extra large leaves and flower heads and look great in the rock garden or garden edge.
Iris 'Contrast In Styles' is a showstopper plant.
We still have tomatoes and they have lots of flowers and fruit, yes fruit, and its not too late to plant them. There's still a great selection of herbs for the barbecue--- 'Barbecue' rosemary whose stems can be used for skewers, basil, thyme, and oregano as well.
Rudbeckia 'Indian Summer' reseeded in the gravel garden.

Our very well made metal stars are perfect for the Fourth of July holiday.

We have wonderfully colorful hanging baskets with pink petunias, purple million bells, and purple scaevola. If you need to add a little color to your pots or garden beds, we have lantana, angelonia, scaevola, and the dark-leaved dahlia 'Mystic Illusion'. The cannas are in flower and will continue putting out flowers all summer long.

This dwarf canna with its tropical look, will flower all summer.

SUSAN'S GARDEN

When I walk through my gardens, I'm still amazed that I have not one, but two, 'hot beds'. I tend to be drawn to cool blues, purples, and pinks with sharp touches of yellow and charteuse, but with so many plants available with orange foliage, it was just a matter of time. One bed started with the dwarf barberry with its lime-rimmed red leaves, sedum 'Angelina' cascading around its base, bright red Drift roses, and a sea of orange and red coneflowers.
'White Profusion' butterfly bush is a butterfly and bee magnet.
Bright yellow caryopteris, spirea 'Ogon' and citrus colored heuchera add lightness. Every hot bed needs variegation and in this bed, the variegated sedum 'Autumn Charm' and weigela 'My Monet Sunset' are a perfect match. Orange berried St. John's Wort, coral phlox, and alchemilla as one edger, brings it all together. I wish I had more room to add the bright yellow columnar juniper but I may settle for Anna's Magic Eightball' that grows to only 12". This is quite a color change from the rest of the garden, but by incorporating similar color in all beds. In this case, the yellows, rich, dark foliage and chaurteuse brings all the beds together since they're used throughout the gardens.
Achillea 'Apricot Delight' is a wonderful blend of soft colors.

I've been blaming the neighbors cat for killing all my birds, but after finding five baby chickadees, beheaded and strewn under a pine tree, I realized the weasel I had seen crossing the road back in the winter has made my garden its hunting ground. They're voracious hunters and kill for sport not just to eat. They climb trees as much as twenty feet. and will even kill its own young if one is injured and then go into a killing frenzy. The birds that have been coming to our garden for years are gone, but so are the rabbits, chipmunks and voles that I've been having problems with. They will also kill mice and sadly frogs. In time, it will move on when the number of prey diminishes. In the meantime, my gardens are tunnel-free but less musical.

Our water lilies will be potted up soon. Keep your pond water clean naturally by using more plants.

Astrantia has reseeded throughout the waterfall garden and is a perfect match for ligularia.
