SUSAN'S GARDEN---What a lovely month June is in the garden. Everything has leafed out and plants are full and promising. All the hard pruning I did last year is forgiven. Perennial geraniums are flowering everywhere. 'Mourning Widow' with its blackish-plum flowers are only allowed in the shrub bed among the barberry, they're so vigorous. Wood geraniums line the path down to the woods, and the bright purple 'Brookside' looks particularly nice next to the

cascading Hakonchloea grass 'All Gold'. Clematis 'Blue Light' is draped over the picket fence and the flowers are double in the first flowering. I spread a circle of fertilizer around all the vines this year to give them a boost and hopefully a heavier reblooming.  Nepeta is a froth of lavender-purple at the base of purple, lavender and blue bearded iris that are just finishing flowering. 'Apricot' Drift roses are in flower along with salvia and ajuga. The pink 'Invincible Spirit' hydrangea is going to be the first hydrangea to flower in my garden this year and is covered with buds. I'll be interested to see how the new version performs as well.

The heavy rains has caused some of the hosta leaves of the larger varieties to bend and the snails are out in droves, so I've been generous with the snail and slug bait. I apply it in dense groundcovers like lamiastrum and lamium which provide cover for the little marauders.
The yellow mockorange does great in partial shade

Trim aquilegia or columbine flower stems back to the ground unless you want them to reseed. Polemonium or Jacob's Ladder is cut right back as well. If creeping phlox has become a little too vigorous or split open, cut it back to a manageable size or shear the top back lightly.
Our collection of birdhouses is complete again. .
