Paul's Notes
We are ready for Memorial Day Weekend! Summer is truly here. Well, for a few days more! In keeping with the heat wave, I was down on the Jersey shore filming with WNEP. We have a piece on Island Beach State Park. A ten mile stretch on unspoiled coast line. We were exploring some of the different micro climates that exist there.
For this weekend only all annuals will be 20% off. Saturday and Sunday and I will be open Memorial Day 10am -1pm only.

It's Rhododendron time! This beauty is 'Minnetonka'.
GARDEN CENTER---The exceptionally hardy lavender 'Phenomenal' has loads of buds and will be flowering soon. If you ever wanted to give lavender another go, this is the variety to try. The herb tables are full of your basics like thyme, basil, and parsley but we have a few unusual ones like chocolate mint, hot and spicy oregano, and lemon grass. Quantities are limited though, so when they're gone, they're gone!

| |
'OSO Easy Cherry Pie' is a trouble-free rose.
Our bare root plants are potted up and we have asparagus, blueberries, grapes, gooseberries, and black currants. These will need extra care in the garden until they're established.
| |
Here's one of the standard Korean lilacs outside the gift shop. It will have to be pruned back after flowering.
Korean or dwarf lilacs are in bloom and we have both tree and shrub forms including the shrub re-bloomer 'Scent and Sensibility'. The more delicate leaves and flowers and smaller form, make these fantastic shrubs for the landscape. If you need immediate color in the garden, purple salvia, 'Moonshine' yarrow, lavender-blue 'Rosanne' and fuschia pink 'Max Frei', perennial geraniums, bearded iris, and roses will add instant color.
| |
The tough rugosa rose is fragrant, hardy, and has rose hips.

SUSAN'S GARDEN---It's always rewarding to see a plant come up that you'd thought you had lost. A huge lavender butterfly bush that was the centerpiece in one of four raised beds, looked as if it had passed. But as I dug up thousands of pearl-like allium bulbs from its base, I found a few silvery leaves shooting up through the soil. Its still not out of the woods though and I'm hoping the hotter temperatures will invigorate this plant. Hibiscus still hasn't shown any sign of life, but that's natural, its a very cautious plant and is one of the latest plants to leaf out. Last years dry summer and dry winter has been tough on many established plants. Hydrangea, weigela and roses have considerable die back and new growth is spare on many of the branches. I'll be sure to water these plants once a week with a good soaking if this summer doesn't see a generous rainfall.

Weigela are a must have plant to attract hummingbirds.
| |
| |
Nothing else blooms like an allium and is hardy for this area.
Pulmonaria or lungwort got a hard trim a few weeks back and in the rock garden, iberis' leggy stems were trimmed back to leaf growth. If you don't want hundreds of seedlings, trim back the euphorbias before they go to seed. The burro's tail is covered with pea sized seed balls and should be cut back to new leaves.
| | Shade gardens don't have to be boring. Texture is everything and a bold-leaved hosta is a must. |
This peony is a cross between a herbaceous and a tree peony. The silvery-pink flowers are spectacular!
