The little shade garden outside the shop is bursting with color now. Bleeding hearts, ligularia and hosta give plenty of contrast

Dear Gardening Friend,
Well, spring has finally burst into the Garden center. I can't remember seeing things look so lovely. We overcame that late cold freeze and since then things have started looking up and up. I think there could be a little frost on Sunday and Monday nights. Protect your tender annuals. The shrubs and perennials won't have a problem. I have been rejuvenating a little part of the woodland walk. Our winterberries had gotten so big that I had prune them severely. There are a couple of newer and smaller varieties that I want try there now... Red Sprite and Little Goblin. The woodland walk is open to all our customers... don't forget to check it out. The entrance is right by our exit.
We have some annuals out...but after Monday there will be a lot more.

GARDEN CENTER---
If you're looking to add fragrance to your garden, we carry some of the most beloved plants. Lilacs of course, top the list and we have Korean tree-form dwarf lilacs in two colors. Viburnum Korean Spice and carcephalum, Honeysuckle 'Seratina', Dianthus for a sweet vanilla-clove scent, lavender including the hardier 'Phenomenal', rugosa roses, we have three or four varieties right now, calycanthus or sweet shrub that smells of strawberries, and the sweet smelling swamp azalea are all in stock now.

The yellow magnolia is blooming. What gorgeous flowers!

I planted up a few salad bowls. These are so pretty and decorative when they start to fill out. Just cut leaves from the edges of the plant and it will keep growing. Much healthier than 'Iceburg' lettuce.

Our sedum tables are full of exciting sedums and sempervirens.
|
Our sedum collection has grown even larger! 'Autumn Joy', 'Autumn Fire', flame-colored 'Angelina', and frosty blue varieties like 'Vera Jameson', 'Bertram Anderson', 'Blueberry Pie', and 'Cauticola' are available now. 'Voodoo' is red tipped and deepens when it becomes cooler. Tiny leaved 'Murale' and 'Brevifolius' are ideal for miniature gardens.
SUSAN'S GARDEN---
I continue to assess the damage done to my garden after a dry summer and an equally snowless and rainless winter. The Japanese maples new growth has finally pushed off last years leaves that froze prematurely. Perennials that have reseeded themselves among the gravel, is always a pleasant surprise and one of the benefits of gravel walk ways. A heuchera or coral bell has even sprouted in a patch of moss on top of a stone. Last years aquilegia, cone flowers, dark-leaved geraniums, lychnis, tradescantia, and polemonium were particularly productive. Some couldn't be placed better if I had planned it myself. Others are in the middle of paths or have chosen to grow in the center of other plants. These are best moved while they're still small. If you wait a few seasons, you'll risk ripping the landscaping fabric since plant roots will go right through or damaging the other plant.

'Apricot Drift' rose is a pretty shrub rose and blooms throughout the summer.

Convalaris, ligularia, pachysandra, and polygonatum frame a mossy stump and thrive in a partly sunny location.

Sedum are a large group of plants that can be used in tough dry conditions. There are lots of low growing varieties with all kinds of leaf color and flower color. The taller varieties tend to flower later later in the season. Typically they are extremely hardy. We have several planters that are able to survive the winters outside. Come and see our great selection |
