Fun at the BIG HEART show

We had a great time at the RPNA Big Heart Show. It stayed cool in LB Skate which was transformed from a skateboard shop into an art gallery to rival any in LB.

A couple hundred people came and browsed or bought  the creative works of Rose Park artists.

Great food, great music and especially great people supporting a great cause.

Occasional Gardening For Temple & E 7th

Volunteer Needed

Anyone having an interest in weeding the small strip of ground in front of the fence at the NW corner of E 7th & Temple please contact info@rpna.org.  Our fence is concealing the vacant lot but in front of the fence has weeds.

Volunteer(s) much appreciated!

Heirloom Cookbooks and the Chefs of Rose Park

Living in these old houses we know that we are lovers of preservation.  There's no other reason that we could deal with the difficulties these houses present.

Loving preservation can be about lost arts, images and of course, food!

Stay tuned as the Rose Park Neighborhood Assoc. develops a way for us all to participate in preserving our recipes with a cookbook.

All ideas and suggestions are welcome.  Please contact emilystevens916@gmail.com if you might be interested in submitting a favorite family recipe.

Power 4 Youth is Looking for Mentors

These kids are looking for YOU

Power 4 Youth is looking for adults who can meet one-on-one with a youth weekly to assist with academic help while building a trusting mentor relationship with a young person.  Training is provided at no cost; the program is free and open to all adults and students.

The goal of Power 4 Youth is to help at-risk students to achieve the best they are capable of through the help of a one-on-one mentor.  Executive Director, Val Parker, remarks, "Students are looking for this support.  We hope this semester to match more youth with mentors, so the need for volunteers is greater than ever before."

To find out more, contact Power 4 Youth at
562-435-2352 or email info@power4youth.org.

CELEBRATE READING

AOC7 3rd Annual Book Drive

The biggest reason for our book drive is to help address the following concern of our city. Long Beach is one of more than 124 cities that is addressing the issue of literacy among our nation's youth.

In the past two years, we gave away at least 9,000 FREE books to the children in our neighborhood. This is our third year and we want to continue our Book Drive and Literacy Fair until we make an impact in our community.

This goal of AOC7 is to collect children's books new or slightly used for our children in our community. Each child that attends our Literacy Fair will receive at least TWO free books to encourage them to read throughout the summer vacation.

The children of AOC7 and it's surrounding areas will have the opportunity to CELEBRATE READING on
Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the Literacy Fair which will be held at Mac Arthur Park from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
. We will have music, multicultural dances, literacy booths and storytelling.

Please join us in CELEBRATE READING and donate a book or two to our cause.

RPNA.ORG AUCTIONS

Check on our auctions at RPNA.ORG

We really hope you will support the auctions. Lots of local vendors are participating and not only will you get some cool stuff but you are supporting the neighborhood association.  Our banners on E. 7th are looking a little sad and there aren't any grants for them anymore.

Grapefruit Harvest Time near Rose Park

Feel Like Picking Fruit?

 hello harvesters and new volunteers!

we're picking grapefruit yet again
this Saturday, are you available?

email:

socalharvest@earthlink.net

We need 8-10 volunteers for this pick! Are you available for approx. 60-90 minutes for a pick near Junipero and 3rd Street?

No experience necessary! We will be: unloading (and reloading) the truck with tools and picked fruit; picking fruit with fruit picker (baskets), trimming greenery from picked fruit, boxing fruit and raking and tidying the yard, cleaning equipment (there are tasks for everyone, seated tasks too) and we'll train you - it's easy :)

NOTE: Closed toe shoes are a must ~

Questions? - Please email!

(PLEASE NOTE: Street address will be emailed to those who confirm their attendance *when* number of needed volunteers has been reached; likely
Friday morning or afternoon after I get off work!)

Info on how to carpool will be provided with the harvesting confirmation ~ :)
