Cherry Avenue Improvement Project Set to Begin

The City of Long Beach is set to begin work for street improvements on Cherry Avenue between Ocean Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). The $1.8 million project is financed with Proposition C funds, and is expected to be completed in March 2015.

The rehabilitation work consists of replacing damaged curbs and gutters, driveways, alley entrances and sidewalks; repairs to damage drainage devices; installation of bus pads; trimming or shaving tree roots; reconstructing areas of deteriorated pavement; cold milling and resurfacing the pavement; and installing pavement markers, markings, traffic striping, signing and curb paint.

The old asphalt material to be removed under this contract will be recycled into new asphalt concrete, or utilized as base material on other street projects.  The street will be resurfaced with asphalt containing up to 15 percent recycled material.  Approximately 122 tons of road base made from recycled concrete, rock, sand and asphalt will be utilized in this project and all concrete work will include recycled waste ash, diverting these material from landfills.

Street sweeping enforcement will be temporarily suspended on adjacent side streets to accommodate displaced parking and provide additional parking. NOTE: Only streets that have "bagged" parking signs will have enforcement suspended. The City is working closely with Long Beach Transit to minimize impacts to bus patrons, as Cherry Avenue is used as a bus route.  Lane closures will be required during construction, and while the roads will stay open during working hours, motorists can expect some traffic delays.  Therefore, motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during construction.

Stop by for a chat with Suja and her staff while you shop at the market. Look for them near the bandshell & info booth. They'll have more battery recycling bags to hand out.

Spotlight on a Friend of Rose Park

Tracy Ames - Owner of Red Leprechaun Irish Pub

Tracy Ames of Rose Park with former Mayor Bob Foster

Former RPNA board member of Rose Park, Tracy Ames always dreamed of opening an Irish pub.  She wanted a fun, friendly place in her neighborhood where both women & men could enjoy a drink and some good food.  That's exactly what she has created at the Red Leprechaun (corner of Termino & Anaheim).  Her restaurant is also the second business in Long Beach to receive approval for Craft Beer to-go.

Tracy has opened her pub to RPNA meetings and events for years.  She is currently planning a "pot luck" event with RPNA for the first months of 2015.

Billboards in Rose Park to Improve Content

At Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal's insistence, CBS Billboard Advertising Co. has  agreed to stop advertising alcoholic products in our neighborhood.  The current billboard at E. 7th & Junipero will change on Oct 27 and will be replaced with more appropriate advertising for our neighborhood and proximity to the elementary school.

If you notice inappropriate ads anywhere in Long Beach, RPNA is encouraging you to complain either to the council office for the offending signage or CBS Advertising.

You can contact CBS by emailing:: info@cbsoutdoor.com

LB Historic District Survey Training Sessions

Hello Historic District Representatives, liaisons and interested parties,

City staff and on-call historic preservation consultants will be conducting a series of on-site volunteer training sessions to prepare resident volunteers to assist with the upcoming photographic survey work for the City of Long Beach Historic District Design Guidelines.

Sessions will last approximately one hour, and everyone is welcome!

A few things to note:

  • You are not required to be a resident of a historic district! All help is welcome and needed.
  • Similarly, you are not restricted to volunteering in your district.
  • The Brenner Place, Elliot Lane, Linden Avenue, Lowena Drive, Minerva Place, Wilton Street and Wrigley Area districts have already been surveyed by consultants. If you live in one of these districts and would like to be involved, please feel free to help with the remaining districts!
  • If you cannot make it to one of the training sessions in your area, please feel free to attend another session. All material will be covered at each session.
  • You can attend just one session, or as many as you like. Ideally, the information can be passed along to others as well.

Volunteers will be paired in groups of two to conduct surveys. Teams can pick or will be assigned manageable areas to photograph. Once the photos have been taken, we will ask volunteers to download them to a USB drive that will be provided by the City. Then, the USB drive should be turned into a designated district liaison who will return them to the City. (If you are interested in acting as a district liaison, please contact me at amanda@gpaconsulting-us.com, or Steve Gerhardt, whose contact information is listed below).

Volunteers should bring:

  • A digital camera with an SD card (we recommend at least 16GB in size),
  • A hat and/or sunscreen
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes
  • Water
  • Clipboard/writing surface
  • Pens/pencils and highlighters

Consultants and the City will provide training materials, survey packets (maps, photo key logs), and USB drives.

Please forward this information to anyone and everyone you feel might be interested in helping so we can get the word out! Specific information on sessions in your area, if applicable, will be forwarded shortly.

We hope to see you there! The best way to enjoy these districts is on foot!
