A New Year in Rose Park
-Emily Stevens, president RPNA |
I hope everyone had a great holiday and now we are planning activities and events for 2013.
Suggestions are always welcome!
We had an offer for an alley clean-up but in looking around it seemed they were in pretty good shape. It would be nice to get some of the dirt alleys paved so if you live by one, please email info@rpna.org.
I've had a few emails and noticed myself that our neighborhood poles are accumulating old signs..Lost pet / garage sale etc. Signs like these are code violations and when they are left up a long time make our neighborhood look a little trashy. If you see one that is obviously old, take it down or report it to me and I'll call and ask them if their pet has been found.
RPNA is trying to support our local businesses this year so we are working on that. We have added a page to our website "Shop Locally" and we'd like to build it up. We do not charge for space on this page if the business is local. Also it would be very nice if you posted to our facebook page when you shop at a local store.
RPNA will be reporting some code violations on E. 7th and 10th in an effort to focus attention on the "look" of these streets. I would appreciate any suggestions or reports and I can keep them confidential. Please email info@rpna.org to reach only me.
Also there has been some interest lately in starting groups in the neighborhood that pertain to personal interests such as book clubs and new moms. RPNA really wants to help you with your group so let us know if you are starting one or need new members for one you already have. We will help you reach out to the neighborhood and assist you with things you may need.
Since it's January of course we are asking that you renew your membership in RPNA, your neighborhood association. We compiled a list in the last newsletter of our accomplishments for 2012 and even we were surprised at how hard we had worked. All the board members are volunteers.
Rose Park deserves to be represented in the community and the city. We love our neighborhood and want it to improve. Please show your support by renewing your membership for $25.00 for the year of 2013. Believe me, you'll get your money's worth!
Neighborhood volunteers are needed so if you're able to help, email info@rpna.org |

Homeless Population Count |
Community volunteers are encouraged to participate in the biennual count of homeless persons in Long Beach on Thursday, January 24, 2013.
The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) conducts the count, which is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This count defines the scope of homelessness, both in the community and across the nation, and helps to determine existing resources, identify gaps, and highlight progress toward ending homelessness.
Approximately 300 community volunteers are needed to conduct this citywide count. The first aspect involves identifying the numbers of homeless individuals and families residing in emergency, transitional and permanent supportive housing programs within Long Beach. The second aspect involves teams comprised of three volunteers, led by a service provider, canvassing and counting homeless people in sectors throughout the city.
Information on the count, including volunteer registration, is available at www.longbeach.gov/health/fss/homeless_services/default.asp. Please submit volunteer forms via fax to 562.570.4066. Volunteers must complete a one-hour orientation/training session prior to the day of the count.
For additional information about the 2013 Everyone Counts process, contact Elsa Ramos, Multi-Service Center Coordinator, at 562.733.1147 ext 103 or at Elsa.Ramos@longbeach.gov. |

Light Up Rose Park: Home Security Lighting |
|
Increased security lighting in the neighborhood is a way for Rose Park residents to deter crime and compensate for the occasional old tree blocking your streetlight.
Criminals will probably avoid streets in our neighborhood that are well lit.
Just imagine a safer street after dark!
Please consider purchasing solar motion activated lights that have a range equal to or longer than the distance from the light to the sidewalk. As people walk along at night they will be illuminated as they go, making the street safer and helping iwatch participants.

Using Go Long Beach Phone App to Repair Your Curb |
|
If you use a smart phone please consider downloading the free app Go Long Beach.
The city of Long Beach can respond to a curb repair GoLongBeach request if the damage is less than 5 feet in length.
This is great news for us! Even if your street is not scheduled for complete repair you can have the deteriorating curb repaired.
There are several issues that can be reported to the city and the application sends them to the correct department. Report graffitti, damaged sidewalks etc. easily and the response if incredible.
Graffitti is usually removed within 24 hours!
Thank you Long Beach!
