What Your Association is Doing

If you find yourself asking what does the RPNA do anyway?  Where do the membership dues go?  Who are these people?  Then this article is for you.

Your neighborhood association, RPNA was formed to represent the neighborhood to improve our area, voice our concerns and gather residents together in this effort.

The city of Long Beach offers residents many ways to interact with them on an individual level and the RPNA encourages this, but it doesn't fit everyone.

The RPNA board are all volunteers.  Our dedication is to the neighborhood for its improvement and notariety.  With changes that are happening with regard to retail stores, we are as disappointed as you are.  Unfortunately we do not have control over every issue, such as permits issued, but we can voice our desires and demands and make some changes.

I think that everyone will agree that a large group of people hold more weight in an argument than one.  There are 22,000 people in Rose Park.  The newsletter and Facebook page reach a fraction of them but certainly not all.  A large portion of the membership dues goes toward reaching all residents of Rose Park.  Community events, park events and written material are used in this way.

The RPNA is always looking for volunteers.  Anyone that can spare even a short amount of time to distribute information, show up at an event to help or participate in the planning and give the board new ideas for helping the neighborhood.

Here is a list of what your association has done in 2012.  As always your comments are welcome.  We are again asking for input and membership to show your support.

Rose Park Annual Tree Lighting

This annual event is cherished among the residents of Rose Park.  For a couple of weeks we get to drive by the park and see a beautifully lit tree.

It represents to most of us that we love and care for our park.

Please join the RPNA as we light this year's tree for peace with the help of Commander Michael Beckman flipping the on-switch.

It's usually cold so bundle up.

This is not a community meeting, you can stop by, have a cookie, listen to some holiday music and go home feeling the spirit of the season.

December 13th

Rose Park 800 Orizaba

6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

See it, Report it NOW

Please call the LBPD immediately about all suspicious activity in the neighborhood.

Activities can be:

Someone looking into parked cars

Unknown person(s) sitting in a parked car

Someone removing screen from your neighbor's window

Unknown person wearing clothing that conceals their identity (hooded sweatshirt, ball cap) who is loitering in the neighborhood

Cars moving along with no apparent destination or without lights

Someone soliciting door t door

Trust your sixth sense, if it doesn't seem right, it probably isn't right.

Holiday Recipe for a Well-Hydrated Tree from Fire Dept.

Secret recipe for a moist tree:

2 gallons of hot water

2 cups of clear Karo syrup

2 oz liquid chlorine bleach

2 pinches of epsom salts

1/2 tsp borax

1 tsp chelated iron (can be purchased from a garden shop)

Mix all ingredients into the 2 gallons of water. set aside

Make a fresh level cut 3 " from the bottom of the tree trunk

Stand the trunk of the tree in the solution for 24 hours

Place your tree in a stand that has a well for water

Use a plastic container to pour the liquid into the tree well and safely store the remaining mixture

Every day top off the well with the solution to keep your tree hydrated

You will notice fewer needles dropping and heightened tree fragrance.

The Karo syrup provides the sugar necessary to allow the tree to take up water.  Up to 1.5 gallons of water can be taken up by the tree over a 2 week period.  Boron allows the tree to take up water to every branch and needle

Epsom & iron keep the tree green

Bleach prevents mold

PARENTS AND PET OWNERS:

Be sure to keep your tree solution out of reach of children and animals.  This is something you don't want them drinking.

Holiday Safety Tips

If you are Traveling:

Obtain an automatic timer for your lights

Ask a neighbor to watch your home and park in your driveway from time to time

Have mail delivery stopped until you return

Request a vacation check from LBPD

If you are out for the evening:

Turn on your lights and a radio or tv

Don't display gifts where they can be seen from outside

If you're Shopping

Park in a well lit space and lock your car, close the windows and put your purchases in your trunk.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash

Shopping with kids? Teach them to go to a store clerk or security gurad if you get seperated.

Light Up Rose Park: Home Security Lighting

Increased security lighting in the neighborhood is a way for Rose Park residents to deter crime and compensate for the occasional old tree blocking your streetlight.

Criminals will probably avoid streets in our neighborhood that are well lit.

Just imagine a safer street after dark!

Please consider purchasing solar motion activated lights that have a range equal to or longer than the distance from the light to the sidewalk.  As people walk along at night they will be illuminated as they go, making the street safer and helping iwatch participants.

Using Go Long Beach Phone App to Repair Your Curb
If you use a smart phone please consider downloading the free app Go Long Beach.

The city of Long Beach can respond to a curb repair GoLongBeach request if the damage is less than 5 feet in length.

This is great news for us!  Even if your street is not scheduled for complete repair you can have the deteriorating curb repaired.

There are several issues that can be reported to the city and the application sends them to the correct department.  Report graffitti, damaged sidewalks etc. easily and the response if incredible.

Graffitti is usually removed within 24 hours!

Thank you Long Beach!

email info@rpna.org is you need help with this app.
