Mentorship Program in Conjunction with 4 Youth

Tuesdays between 4-8pm

Our Savior's Lutheran Church

Many say they want to help our youth - now's your chance. Garden of the Mind is partnering with POWER 4 Youth to establish a POWER 4 Youth mentoring site for middle and senior high school students who live in the greater Rose Park area.

Luther Burbank School has made tremendous gains in improving test scores in the elementary grades, now let's help those students continue to achieve academically.

Please come Tuesday, Oct. 30th at 6:30 for orientation and training as a mentor. Limited parking is available at Our Savior Lutheran (370 Junipero). No expertise is required! You'll be helping a student achieve success by having them complete homework assignments, encouraging reading skills and providing regular support.

Thereafter you'll be meeting with your student weekly at Our Savior Lutheran during the school semester. This is truly rewarding! Spend an hour and a half improving someone and then go for a cup of coffee. To help us make this happen - in addition to committed mentors - we need donations of board games, reading books and school supplies.

Please contact Val Parker at Power 4 Youth, val@power4youth.orgor by calling 562-435-2352.

About Garden of the Mind is an informal group of Luther Burbank teachers, Rose Park neighbors and others who believe that collaboration strengthens us and our communities.

Historic District Seminar
First in a Series

The 1st Seminar Focuses On Ins & Outs for Realtors Working in Historic Districts

Wednesday November 7th 9:30am-Noon * Villa Riviera * Ocean and Alamitos, Long Beach, CA

This first-in-a-series of historic district seminars highlights the value, benefits and requirements of historic district real estate sales.

Presented by the Rose Park Neighborhood Association, the purpose is to reach Realtors and others who facilitate housing sales in Historic Districts learn the requirements of real estate sales of properties within historic districts.

This year marks increased interest in the purchase of older homes, especially those in Historic Districts. Local Realtor Jeff Anderson said, "Inmy experience selling homes in historic districts of Long Beach, the homes in historic districts can be as much as 25% higher in value than homes literally across the street in adjacent neighborhoods." The City of Long Beach is known as a leader in the formation of its 17 Historic Districts. Rose Park Neighborhood Association is home to two of the largest in the city.

Topics include: The Value of Historic District Home Ownership; Real Estate Rules for Buying and Selling in a Historic District; Tools for the Buyer of a Historic Home and a Q&A with a panel of experts. Experts in real estate sales in historic districts, neighborhood heritage and architecture, members of the city planning department will all be on hand to step the audience through the regulatory steps, as well as the strategies to create new homeowner success.

Plans are in progress for a tour of the historic Villa Riviera, including inside some of the exclusive homes. There will also be ample time for networking with local neighborhood associations, historic organizations and real estate industry professionals.

CERT Program Expanding with Neighborhood Teams, Refresher Courses
The Long Beach Fire Department is expanding the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program by implementing neighborhood teams and adding refresher courses.

"In case of a major disaster, our residents will be need to be self-reliant while our first responders will be dealing with high priority emergencies," Mayor Bob Foster said. "Expanding our already successful CERT program will enable teams of trained people to augment public safety officials, and to start providing immediate services in their own neighborhoods."

Approximately 5,000 people have completed the 22-hour CERT training in Long Beach, learning how to assist their families, neighbors and colleagues in the event of a significant incident. CERT graduates also learn how to prepare for a major disaster, and to be self-sustainable for several days.

Now the Fire Department is implementing Neighborhood CERT teams across the city, to increase the program's effectiveness. After a significant incident, public safety officials must prioritize their responses, and might be unable to reach some neighborhoods for several days. CERT teams would be able to serve as a force multiplier by going door-to-door, checking on residents, gathering and providing information, and providing some initial assistance.

Working with the CERT teams would have the additional benefit of improving ongoing communication between the Fire Department and CERT graduates.

As part of that outreach, the Fire Department is offering - and encouraging all CERT graduates to attend - two-hour, hands-on skill refresher sessions. The Fire Department also encourages community members to take the six-week, 22-hour CERT training.

For more information on upcoming courses, or to register for CERT training, visit
www.longbeach.gov/cert or contact Will Nash, CERT coordinator, at Will.Nash@longbeach.gov.
Light Up Rose Park: Home Security Lighting

Increased security lighting in the neighborhood is a way for Rose Park residents to deter crime and compensate for the occasional old tree blocking your streetlight.

Criminals will probably avoid streets in our neighborhood that are well lit.

Just imagine a safer street after dark!

Please consider purchasing solar motion activated lights that have a range equal to or longer than the distance from the light to the sidewalk.  As people walk along at night they will be illuminated as they go, making the street safer and helping iwatch participants.

Using Go Long Beach Phone App to Repair Your Curb
If you use a smart phone please consider downloading the free app Go Long Beach.

The city of Long Beach can respond to a curb repair GoLongBeach request if the damage is less than 5 feet in length.

This is great news for us!  Even if your street is not scheduled for complete repair you can have the deteriorating curb repaired.

There are several issues that can be reported to the city and the application sends them to the correct department.  Report graffitti, damaged sidewalks etc. easily and the response if incredible.

Graffitti is usually removed within 24 hours!

Thank you Long Beach!
