CSLP 2015 Summer Manual Input Needed Summer 2015 may not be right around the corner, but the process of writing the 2015 Collaborative Summer Library Program children's manual has begun, and your ideas are needed! The theme is, "Every Hero Has a Story," and the working chapter titles are: - Community Heroes (helpers in the community or family members).
- Heroes throughout History (heroes in mythology, tall tales and true stories of historical heroes).
- Superhero Training Camp (children get the superhero experience as they dress up and act like superheroes).
- Trusty Sidekicks (focusing on the often overlooked, but very important, sidekick).
- Superheroes to the Rescue (superheroes in books, conventional and not so conventional superheroes).
Any ideas for the following topics are also welcome: - School visits and other ways of promoting programs in your community (a skit or puppet show is always welcome!)
- Setting the scene: library decorations, bulletin boards and props.
- Family literacy programs.
- Original puppet plays, especially for one or two puppeteers.
- Outreach ideas for underserved groups.
Send your ideas by September 30, 2013 to: Amanda Struckmeyer 309 N. Hillside Terrace Madison, WI 53705 608.256.9737

Fashion Dash in Sarasota County

Selby Public Library (Sarasota County) hosted Fashion Dash! - a teen fashion show and clothing swap in July 2013. This program included:
- Auditions for teen models (featuring a diverse group of community leaders as judges).
- A modeling class taught by Friends' President, and professional fashion show producer, Kenney DeCamp.
- The big finale, a runway fashion show and clothing exchange.
The event brought approximately 250 people to the library. Customers with clothes to swap were given the Royal treatment of approximately 3,000 pieces of quality clothing items provided by Plato's Closet and Woman's Exchange Inc., as well as generous individual donors. This huge array of fashion, in all sizes for men and women, was meticulously organized by volunteers from Woman's Exchange Inc., community volunteers and Friends of the Selby Public Library. The fashion show took place between clothes swapping and was an exciting and impressive event. Teens were beautifully dressed in casual clothing provided by Plato's Closet. Each model exuded confidence and grace as they walked the runway to tunes provided by DJXtreme. The modeling class transformed young people into super teen models!
Thanks to inspiration from the FLYP (Florida Library Youth Program) workshop brainstorm session, ideas from fellow librarians, extraordinary partners Plato's Closet, Woman's Exchange Inc., Merle Norman and the Friends group, we pulled off an event that was a real crowd pleaser, a teen confidence booster, and a feel good experience. Approximately 1,000 pieces of remaining items were donated to the local YMCA youth shelter. We were so pleased with the results, we plan to start early next year on our second annual Fashion Dash!
The real success story is how sponsors (now partners) came together to make a small idea a big event. Thank you to:
- Karen Koblenz, Woman's Exchange Executive Director, for suggesting and creating a clothing exchange.
- Alexa Hansard and Carol Piper of Plato's Closet, for creating a fantastic fashion show!
- Kenney DeCamp for making super models from local teens, and for so much more!
- Merle Norman and local hair stylists, for adding the final touches to our teen super models .
- Friends of the Selby Public Library and staff, for helping bring it all togethe.r

Nature's Children Series. (2013). New York : Children's Press. Gregory, Josh. Working Dogs.
Daly, Timothy. Alligators. Franchino, Vicky. Sea Turtles. Orr, Tamra B. Polar Bears. Nature's Children is a series of nonfiction books about animals that will captivate children the moment they see the covers. Who wouldn't want to explore a book with a picture of a dog in goggles, or an alligator with a turtle resting in its mouth?
Each book starts with a Fact File page that contains scientific information about the featured animal, including: genus, species, physical characteristics and diet. The pictures throughout the books are bright, vibrant and thought provoking. Key vocabulary words are highlighted in red and can be found in the back of each book in Words to Know. There are fun facts scattered throughout that give information to be shared, such as: did you know a polar bear can swim nonstop for nine days? Habitat maps give children a visual sense of where the animals live, and a Find Out More page encourages children to enrich their studies and refers them to additional books on the Scholastic website. Far from dull, the occasional gross fact and vivid photograph will entice boys and girls alike. Especially important is the nod to conservation. Each book gives children the tools to not only improve their reading and comprehension skills, but also invites them to take a personal interest in their environment. Public and school libraries will find the books in this series a valuable addition to the Common Core collection.
