Sneak Peek Book Reviews
by Guest Reviewer Laurel Gainer, Umatilla Public Library, Lake County Library System

Graham, Ian. You Wouldn't Want to Be on the First Flying Machine! (2013). New York : Children's Press.

Graham's book, part of the "You Wouldn't Want to..." series, is set in the late 1800's, as Orville and Wilbur Wright review all the previous flying machine designs. Fascinated by all the different designs, the Wright Brothers decide to tackle their own flying machine.  They progress from small models to larger models they can test. The final design actually works... almost. They decide to start over, do some avionic research and mix in some unique ideas of their own. The brothers start with a glider and then add a power design and props to boost the power and wind speed. The final result of their successful design is the very first trip by air, overseas, to France.  Graham has written a wonderful book that is formatted as an idea book with colorful design sketches and cartoon pictures
.

Jemison, Mae. The 100 Year Starship. (2013). New York : Children's Press.

The 100 Year Starship, part of the True Books series, touches on the history of how we explore the world we live in and how evolving technology has helped us break the bounds of this world into outer space. Dr. Jemison started the 100 Year Starship Foundation to explore options on making star travel possible in the next 100 years. She explains some of the challenges of stellar travel, such as how to make a spaceship, how to protect it, and how to power it for deep space travel.  Where should we go? What should we do when we get there? Jemison touches on these puzzles and other interesting space facts.  Beautiful pictures and resources entice the reader to further explore this fascinating subject.

Jemison, Mae. Discovering New Planets. (2013). New York : Children's Press.

Discovering New Planets, part of the True Books series, explores the mechanics of how the universe and our solar system was made and how it works. Dr. Jemison shares details of how we explore outer space from here on Earth and the challenging task of searching for planets in and out of our solar system.  She goes into the various ways to listen, view and take pictures of planets so far away. What kind of planets might we find beyond the borders of the known universe? What kind of life forms might these planets hold? Wonderful pictures are generously interspersed with facts and statistics. This book is a great research tool for the young reader, or just a great read.
