Toyota Family Learning Initiative
The National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) announced a new six-year initiative, Toyota Family Learning. NCFL is now accepting grant applications to further family learning beyond the classroom and into homes and communities.

This year, five organizations will be awarded a three-year, $175,000 grant, in addition to a wide range of NCFL training and communication support, learning items, and materials. Grantees will engage vulnerable families in learning together and participating in family mentor and service learning activities. Schools, libraries, and community-based organizations that provide services to families are eligible to apply.

Applications are being accepted until June 24.

SYNC Offers Free YA Audiobooks All Summer

SYNC is an online program sponsored by audiobook publishers and
AudioFile magazine to introduce your young adult audience to the listening experience.  SYNC offers two free complete audiobook downloads every week from May 30 to August 21. This is the third year for the program in which a contemporary young adult audiobook is paired thematically with a classic audiobook title.

MP3 titles can be downloaded for free (through the OverDrive Media Console, compatible for both Mac and Windows).  Each title will be available for download for a period of seven days.  Once downloaded, titles can be listened to at any time.

OCLC is collaborating with a number of WorldCat partners, including DOGO books and Goodreads, to give librarians a free, easy way to enhance their planned summer reading programs with an online social component. Learn more.

VIRTUAL SUMMER BOOK CLUB

The Virtual Summer Book Club is a national, two-month reading challenge across public library teen groups and individual teens from JUNE 10 - JULY 26, 2013. During the challenge, teens will log on to the Get Schooled website weekly for inspiration and engage in point-earning activities all focused around reading activities. These include online games, polls, trivia, discussion boards, check-in opportunities, and more.

Activities will focus on two books - The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - and cover many other reading-focused topics.

Teens will be able to track their activity on a personal leader-board, earn points and badges, and cash in for cool swag (e-readers, books, gift cards, and more). In this structured and fun reading challenge, teens engage in a way that boosts their critical thinking, reading comprehension, and confidence. And libraries and community organizations get access to Get Schooled's free online tools which add a highly interactive component to existing summer reading programs.

SummerTeen is Back!
Now in its second year, the day-long online conference sponsored by
School Library Journal is set for July 24, and it's completely free. Register today for SummerTeen 2013: Hot Books for Young Adults featuring YA author panels, galley giveaways, and a keynote from 2013 YALSA's Margaret A. Edwards Award winner and fantasy maven Tamora Pierce. This event is for teens as well as librarians, educators, and anyone who loves teen literature. The online format makes it possible to broadcast the event to teens in the library, giving them a front-row seat to hear directly from authors they know and love. Register by July 24, 2013.

Sneak Peek Book Reviews
by Guest Reviewer Jonathan Dolce

Gregory, Josh. The Superstorm Hurricane Sandy. (2013). New York : Scholastic.

Part of the True Book series from Scholastic, this book's timely topic makes it a highly relevant addition to any extreme weather nonfiction collection. Don't be fooled by the small format as this book is loaded with well-researched facts and background information. Expressive pictures present the facts without sensationalizing. The text would suit grade schoolers from fourth grade up and the outlined details lend themselves to short reports.

The back of the book is full of detailed maps, historical information, and Hurricane Sandy statistics, and includes a glossary, index, and a print resource list as well as link and keyword search suggestions. Overall, an excellent choice for brief reports or children fascinated by the worst that weather can dole out.

Rosier, Maggie. You Can Draw It! - Robots. (2013). New York : Scholastic.

Years ago, Lee J. Ames held the market for how-to drawing books and, to his credit, his multistep drawings held a child's hand through the drawing process. In subsequent years many drawing books just leap from a simple line drawing to highly-realized, professionally finished pictures which look as though they may have been finished off in Photoshop.

While the format and printing quality of this book are appealing, the content leaves something to be desired. There are missing steps in the drawing process of the nine sci-fi inspired robots featured in this book. The series topics are sure to appeal with subjects such as sharks, robots, and more, but the publisher seems to be too focused on form and not substance in helping children gain confidence in their drawing ability.
