National Poetry Month
National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets, designed to draw attention to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern.
The Academy hopes to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture while acknowledging and celebrating poetry's ability to sustain itself in the many places where it is practiced and appreciated.
The Libri Foundation Grants
The Libri Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2013 Books for Children grants.
The Libri Foundation is a nationwide, nonprofit organization which donates new quality hardcover children's books to small and rural public libraries throughout the United States.
In order to encourage and reward local support of libraries, The Libri Foundation will match money raised by local sponsors from $50 to $350 on a 2-to-1 ratio. Thus, a library can receive up to $1,050 worth of new children's books. After a library receives a grant, local sponsors (such as formal or informal Friends groups, civic or social organizations, local businesses, etc.) have four months or longer if necessary to raise their matching funds.
Quick Tips for Schools and Libraries
Booklist's Quick Tips for Schools and Libraries delivers easy, practical ideas and activities that help integrate children's and young-adult books into the curriculum or library shelves. With thematic bibliographies, author interviews, and useful ideas for connecting kids and books, each monthly e-newsletter also features a sneak peek at what's coming up in future issues of Book Links and Booklist magazines.
Target Early Learning Childhood Reading Grant
Each year Target offers a $2,000 Early Childhood Reading Grant. Applications are accepted between noon CST March 1 and noon CST April 30 each year. Target funds programs that foster a love of reading and encourage young children, preschool through third grade, to read together with their families. Reading grants support programs such as library storytimes and family reading nights. Programs must take place between September 2013 and August 2014.

Out and About
|
|
Out and About showcases programs and activities from libraries around the state and country. This month we feature two Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros
(Children's Day/Book Day) Family Book Club mini-grant recipients.
Founded in 1997 by children's author Pat Mora-with help from the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking ( REFORMA), Día "emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds" and culminates yearly on April 30. Twelve winning library entries from across the United States ranged widely in diversity of population, grant application-savvy, and level of experience in celebrating Día.
A predominantly Haitian American community, North Miami's first book club session will kick off with visits by a Haitian American author to the participating 12 elementary schools in the area, and then continue with book club meetings every two weeks. "There will be a facilitator, a translator, and a bilingual book discussion led by local storyteller Lilian Nerette Louise," says library director Lucia Gonzalez. "Parents will have the experience of reading books together with their children. They are mostly working parents and it's very hard to get them to the library. We're also offering them a nice sit-down dinner."
Cuentame un Cuento /Tell Me a Story Book Club
Orange County Library System's Orlando Public Library youth programs assistant Jackie Padilla and youth outreach coordinator Natalie Houston found that having strong relationships and partnerships with local businesses and talent was a big plus in applying for this award. Community groups, Houston says, can "either help spread the news about programs, or donate their time and services. We've used a local DJ for entertainment, a Cuban bakery for refreshments, etc. But these relationships have to be built over time." This will be Orlando's seventh Día program, and the library will extend the celebration into the whole year until next April with bilingual storytimes and its "Cuentame un cuento /Tell Me a Story Book Club."
