Summer Reading Program Workshops

The following 2013 Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP)/Florida Library Youth Program (FLYP) summer workshops are still open for registration.

February 5                 Daytona Beach (Volusia County)

February 7                 Gainesville (Alachua County)

February 11               Jacksonville (Duval County)

February 21               Naples (Collier County)

Over 400 youth services staff members have already
attended a FLYP Workshop.  One of the many activities participants enjoyed was being eaten by the boa constrictor.

I'm being swallowed by a boa constrictor.

A boa constrictor? A boa constrictor.

I'm being swallowed by a boa constrictor

And I don't like it one little bit!

Oh no! He's swallowed my toes!

Oh gee! He's swallowed my knees.

Oh fiddle! He's around my middle.

Oh heck. He's up to my neck!

Oh dread! He's over my mmmmm....

Feel free to download the pattern to create your own boa constrictor; be prepared to hear your young patrons giggle hysterically!

Black History Month: Primary Source Material From Florida Memory

In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson began officially commemorating African-American history during an annual week of remembrance. Woodson promoted the observance of "Negro History Week" during the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Woodson was one of the first academically trained African-American historians in the United States. Through his efforts to celebrate and study the nation's African-American heritage, February is now officially designated as Black History Month.

This list features resources on African-American history from the collections of the State Library and Archives of Florida. Black history in Florida is especially rich, dating back to the early 16th century. These resources attest to the struggles and triumphs of persons of African descent in Florida history.

Exploring Florida Activity Book
Now Available From the Museum of Florida History

The Museum of Florida History has completed an activity book to complement Viva Florida 500, and it is now available to teachers and media specialists across the state.

This activity book features Florida artist Christopher Still's paintings of Florida from prehistoric to modern times.  Complemented by primary source and Web-based activities, it enables young people to visualize and appreciate the state's growth over time.  Tailored for fourth and fifth grade students but adaptable to other ages, Exploring Florida introduces Viva Florida 500, which commemorates the arrival of Europeans and the vibrant and diverse cultural landscape that has resulted.

For information or to request free copies call 850.245.6400.  A reproducible version is also available for download.

Common Sense for Common Core

Scholastic has launched a new website, "Common Sense for the Common Core," that aims to help teachers, school leaders, and parents understand these  standards, and provides instructional programs to implement them.

Built in consultation with Common Core experts, the website answers questions about the standards and points parents and teachers toward resources to help them understand what is changing and what is not.

Digital Learning Day

Digital Learning Day is a national campaign that celebrates teachers and shines a spotlight on successful instructional practice and effective use of technology in classrooms across the country.  Join the nationwide celebration of innovative teaching and learning through digital media and technology on February 6, 2013.

Library Lovers' Month

Library Lovers' Month is a month-long celebration of school, public, and private libraries of all types. This is a time for everyone, especially library support groups, to recognize the value of libraries and to work to ensure that the nation's libraries will continue to serve.

Storytime: Not Just for Kids Anymore, is based on the American Library Association's Every Child Ready to Read @ your library® training program. This 30-minute DVD defines the six early literacy skills that children need before they enter school and shows portions of 10 library storytimes infused with early literacy fun for children.

SEFLIN members may borrow this and other multimedia materials for up to one month. On the SEFLIN website, log in and go to the Staff Training Store to view the DVDs and to register for Storytime: Not Just for Kids Anymore.

Summer Reading Grants

Dollar General Literacy Foundation Summer Reading Grants provide funding to local nonprofit organizations and libraries to help with the implementation or expansion of summer reading programs. Programs must target Pre-K through 12th grade students who are new readers, below grade level readers or readers with learning disabilities.  Deadline to apply is February 28, 2013.
Out and About

Out and About showcases programs and activities from libraries around the state and country. This month we feature a program from Ohio.

We did a "Live Angry Birds" with tweens and had them flinging stuffed animal toys -- the licensed birds, found at Five Below, which are about four inches in diameter--at pig stuffed animals perched on cardboard preschool blocks. Then we gave away the pigs and birds as our prizes. We used an exercise band as the slingshot. We had a craft station where the tweens made birds out of yarn -- created handmade pompoms and hot-glued eyes, eyebrows and mouths onto them.

There are a ton of Angry Birds suggestions on Pinterest.  Don't miss the bird pizzas!

School Librarians and the Use of Technology
Free Webinars Hosted by Project Leadership in Action

Media specialists in Florida who participated in the Project LEAD program while they were students at FSU will discuss the results of their own action research projects in the school library involving technology integration practice.
