Florida History Day Reminder

2013 Florida History Fair

Sponsored by the Museum of Florida History, the Florida History Fair (FHF) is an annual, statewide activity that enhances the teaching and learning of history at elementary and secondary levels. Florida is an affiliate of National History Day (NHD), which promotes history in the classroom by offering students the means and encouragement to do original research about people, ideas, and events of the past.

Based on a theme selected annually by NHD, students in grades 6 to 12 use primary and secondary sources to research a topic relating to local, national, or world history. The 2012-2013 theme is "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events." After analyzing and interpreting the information they have gathered, students express their findings in a paper, exhibit, performance, documentary, or website.

Most students are well into their projects at this point and are getting ready for their school and regional contests. For libraries, this means students will be looking for additional resources to strengthen their entries. In addition to checking out books, they will need access to library computers and databases. Any support that library staff can give will help to ease many of their anxieties.

If questions arise, the Florida History Fair and NHD websites provide extensive information about creating entries. In addition, you can contact the County Coordinator in your district for information about local contests. You can also email State Coordinator KC Smith  ([email protected]) or State Co-coordinator Jennie Brock ([email protected]) for assistance.

Viva Florida 500 viva florida

This month marks the start of the year-long commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Len's arrival on Florida's east coast. Libraries across the state are gearing up for all types of programs. If you have programs that you would like to share, you may submit them to the Viva Florida 500 website or send your information to Jana Fine at [email protected] and I will include it in the FLYP monthly newsletter.

FLOR500 florida wildflowers

FLOR500 is a participatory art, nature, and history project created by Miami artist Xavier Cortada to commemorate Florida's quincentennial in 2013. The project marks the importance of the moment when the history of our state changed forever and gives us a glimpse of what its landscape was like 500 years ago. The goal is to have 500 native wildflower gardens planted by students and dedicated to one of 500 important Floridians selected by a team of historians.

Public libraries can participate by hosting a variety of programs or events such as native wildflower talks or planting a native wildflower garden in or around the library. Register your event.

American Library Association Youth Media Awards

The American Library Association (ALA) Youth Media Awards (YMA) will be announced on January 28, 2013, at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, Washington. Each year ALA honors books and media for children and teens. Selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, the awards encourage original and creative work in the field of children's and young adult literature and media. The award announcements are made as part of the ALA Midwinter Meeting. Award presentations will be made at the ALA Annual Conference. Contact the ALA Public Information Office at [email protected] with questions about the YMA announcement.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service - January 21, 2013

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The event is a great opportunity for libraries to work with their teen patrons and/or Teen Adivsory Group on a service project that improves the library or some other part of the community. Learn more and get resources to help you plan a project, promote your project, or find service opportunities.

Out and About

Out and About showcases programs and activities from libraries around the state. This month we feature a successful activity in Sarasota County.

"Girls, Gadgetry and Galvanizing Genius"

Youth Services Staff at The Frances T. Bourne Jacaranda Public Library and the Venice Public Library partnered with the Venice Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to present "Girls, Gadgetry and Galvanizing Genius" on Saturday, November 17, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The event was a follow up to a Books-to-Action library book display that the AAUW arranged at both libraries, featuring women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

The goal was to have 25 girls, ages 9 - 12, attend. The end count was 27 at the event and 13 on the waiting list. AAUW members developed projects for science, engineering, and math. Jacaranda Library's Young Adult Librarian, Andrea Gehringer, developed the technology project. For the "Butterflies, Beetles and Bugs, Oh My" project, at the green science table, girls counted the bugs in petri dishes under magnifiers. At the orange technology table, girls were shown how to hook in an LED light in a black cuff for "Wearable Light." Girls built a "Lego Balloon Car" at the blue engineering table. Working with large dice, provided by Sarasota County Parks and Recreation, girls used math skills to understand probability in "Chances Are" at the purple math table. AAUW provided all the publicity posters, banners, and bookmarks as well as all the decorations for the event and materials for their STEM projects. Refreshments, visors, and lanyards were provided by the Friends of the Library.

Sheila Kaufer, Jacaranda Library's Youth Services Librarian, worked directly with AAUW on organization and presentation. Since this was a tween program, both Sheila and Andrea worked together on this extremely successful event. Andrea developed a really cool flyer as well as the name tags. Sheila worked directly with the School Board to have the flyer approved for distribution to public, charter, and private elementary and middle schools, targeting 4th through 6th graders. Homeschoolers were also contacted. Sarasota County Communications developed and sent out a special press release for the event.

Upon registering, each girl received a sun visor - red, green, orange, or purple. The color of the visor divided them into groups. The groups rotated from one table to the next, with a total of 20 minutes at each table. A mid-morning break for refreshments gave the girls a chance to socialize. The event began to wrap up at about 12:15 p.m. with time for questions. Girls were given a short evaluation to fill out and the overall description from them was "awesome." Each girl received a bag that included a booklet with bibliographies and lists of famous women in engineering, computer science, math, technology, and science as well as a list of AAUW volunteers, contributors, lenders, Sarasota County Youth Services Librarians and acknowledgement of donations. Before the girls left, they were able to choose two free books to take home and were given a special bookmark to remember the event.

The young women who attended represented five towns, 13 schools and home-school students. Age 10 was the most common age. All of the 15 AAUW members who worked on the project (and those who were there the day of the event) registered to be volunteers through Sarasota County Government in advance. One of them is now a regular volunteer in Youth Services and two were already regular Youth Services volunteers. One AAUW member was available just to take pictures for their monthly newsletter and to send to their national headquarters. In addition, Jo Lize, Venice Library's Youth Services Librarian and Grace Moore, Selby Library's Youth Services Librarian, were also there the day of the event as extra help. In fact, Grace and Sheila will be attending a January meeting of the AAUW Sarasota Branch to speak about this special collaborative program in order to hopefully replicate the event at Selby Library.
