safeplaceSafe Place Homes Needed

From NAMC Member Rob Rapp

Community Human Services is in need of a caring family to provide temporary shelter to runaway and homeless teens through their Safe Place Program.

Through this rewarding experience, eligible families will:

  • Provide temporary housing for 1 or 2 youth in their guest room.  Placements are intermittent and last no longer than 20 days, usually shorter.
  • Receive a $1,000 monthly stipend, regardless of the number of days youth are placed with the family.
  • Be able to continue their daytime routine, including going to work.
  • Receive training and support from our counselors.
  • Have a positive impact on good kids who want to succeed.

Safe Place attempts to identify runaway and homeless youth, provide them basic aid, offer safe exits from the street, and reduce their risk of harm by providing comprehensive services to the greater Monterey Peninsula. We provide food, clothing, temporary shelter, a 24-hour helpline, street outreach, crisis resolution counseling, family reunification or alternate placement, education about sexual safety and violence, substance abuse prevention and intervention, information and referrals, and aftercare.  Above all, we provide caring adults to listen to and respect the youth - youth who too often have been marginalized at best and abused at worst.

We ask that you post the attached flyer on your bulletin board and/or mention our need to anyone who might be interested. Please call me at 831-373-4421 with any questions. Thank you as always for all that you do for our community.

Sincerely,

Vincent Delgado

csudayDay of Service & Learning at CSUMB

The CSU Monterey Bay Service Learning Institute is organizing a day of "Service & Learning" in honor of the Investiture of our new president Dr. Eduardo Ochoa.  The formal investiture will take place on Friday, November 15. Our goal is to mobilize 300+ CSUMB faculty, staff and students to commit to spending  from 10am-1pm on Saturday, November 16, doing various service and community-building projects at partner sites throughout the region.

We are envisioning Work Teams of 10+ people going out to organizations and working on a project.  Of course, if there are bigger projects, we can gather more people together.

Also, we want to broaden our definition of "service," and include opportunities for dialogue about various community issues that could be of interest.  Our hope is that we will have a good representation of faculty, staff and students participating on that day.

Our goal is to have a short list of projects by October 15.

I have attached a Service Project Request Form that organizations can fill out if they would like to participate.

Thanks again for your support.  And feel free to call me if you have any questions at all.

Appreciatively,

Dr. Seth S. Pollack, Professor
