NAMC Core Leader Profile
| |
Mark Boos, Director of Development Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast
Current Position: Director of Development of Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast
Number of years in your field: I've been with Girl Scouts since 2007 and prior to that I was with Junior Achievement since 2001.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? I like to see the difference Girl Scouts is making in the lives of local girls and their families, particularly when it comes to advancing girl leadership, a love of the outdoors and our impact on girls in underserved communities.
What is the most challenging part of your job? With the recent economic downturn it is difficult to keep the funding hopper filled and running smoothly, but at the same time it provides the opportunity to say "what if" and that is very much a place I like to work from.
These are tough times-what keeps you going? I'm pretty good at keeping a balance in my life; I have a couple of great kids, I have off time outdoor hobbies and I volunteer for The American Legion, Relay for Life and as a Boy Scout Leader.
What do you do when you're not working? I fish, camp, hike and am an avid reader and a bit of a Civil War buff.
What do you value about non profits? I think non profits are doing God's work. In our society, what non profits do can't be accomplished by government in many cases. We are the glue that holds the fabric of our communities together.
Why are you a member of NAMC? I believe that NAMC, as an advocate for the non- profit community in Monterey County, helps its members be more successful, more connected to each other. NAMC provides a unified voice- providing a synergy that we would not have if we had to stand on our own.

Report from Legislative Update
| |
 | Assembly Member Luis Alejo and Moderator Denika Boardman
|
by Lee Hulquist, Food Bank for Monterey County
Members and guests of the Nonprofit Alliance of Monterey County heard from Assembly Member Luis Alejo and Ken Larson of the California Association of Nonprofits at our annual Legislative Update on April 27.
Assembly Member Alejo outlined the difficult choices being made as the California Legislature works toward the June 15 deadline to present a balanced state budget. He acknowledged the effect deep cuts to nonprofit programs will have on the people they serve.
 | |
Members pose questions for Mr. Alejo.
|
Assembly Member Alejo urged collaboration among nonprofits and encouraged attendees to contact his legislative staff to learn how to best represent the communities they serve.
In his efforts to address poverty and the income gap in California, (the widest income gap in the United States) Assembly Member Alejo requested support for AB 1439, his legislation that would create an annual adjustment to the minimum wage in California. This legislation would adjust the state minimum wage on an annual basis according to the rate of inflation. Please see his website for more information about this legislation.
Ken Larson spoke about several bills currently being considered that, if passed and signed by the Governor, will affect nonprofits in California.
The CalNonprofit website, www.calnonprofits.org , will have a Legislation Bill Tracker function under the Advocacy menu soon. Ken went over several bills, including:
- New rules affecting donor disclosure
- Requirements for organizations to protect young people from sex offenders
- Firework sales
- Use of donor lists for Animal protection organizations
- and a proposal to simplify nonprofit filing requirements
Handouts will be posted soon on the NAMC website under Resources/Articles .

Nonprofit Compensation & Benefit Survey
| | Time to purchase the just-published "Fair Pay for Northern California Nonprofits: The 2012 Compensation and Benefits Survey" report
With 402 participating agencies reporting on over 21,000 jobs, the 2012 survey report is among the most robust in the survey's 34-year history. The 2012 survey report will help your organization: - Set fair salaries and benefits to attract and retain the best employees
- Evaluate industry standards for compensation for a range of positions
- Budget and plan for the cost of adding new staff members
- Analyze your own jobs and compensation
- Stand up to the scrutiny of an increasingly skeptical public
- Compare your salaries and benefits with others in your community, not with organizations totally out of your local economic market.
And here are some questions the survey can help nonprofit managers answer: - How do the salaries paid at our organization compare with those paid at similar, local organizations?
- Are organizations still freezing salary levels, or are more planning to increase salaries during the next year?
- How common are bonuses or incentive pay for jobs like ours?
- Are organizations shifting benefits costs to employees?
- How do pay levels for male and female Executive Directors compare?
To find out how your agency can acquire this must-have resource (published May 1), click on www.nonprofitcomp.com, or contact Nonprofit Compensation Associates, the publishers of the survey, at survey@nonprofitcomp.com or (510) 645-1005. |
Join "Vote with Your Mission" Campaign

Support Nonprofit Values
On May 1, CalNonprofits launched an exciting new campaign, Vote with Your Mission, with the goal of having 100% of eligible nonprofit staff, board members, and volunteers vote in the June and November 2012 elections. The campaign aims to re-frame the nonprofit sector as a significant segment of the voting public and to increase the number of people voting with the ideals and values that bring them into the nonprofit sector. To date, more than 100 California nonprofit organizations have signed on to the campaign.
California nonprofits sign on to Vote with Your Mission by pledging to do at least two of six action items, such as asking their staff, board members, volunteers, and constituents to vote, providing nonpartisan voter registration materials at their sites, and displaying a Vote with Your Mission poster.
Once nonprofits sign on, they receive a campaign kit with tips and resources for participating in the campaign, including legal frequently asked questions. These materials and resources, along with a complete list of organizations participating in Vote with Your Mission, are available on the campaign website, http://votewithyourmission.org.
For more information, please visit http://votewithyourmission.org or contact our CEO, Jan Masaoka, at (415) 926-0034 or janm@CalNonprofits.org.

"8" The Play at Western Stage
| | Western Stage Reading of "8" the play July 20, 7:30 PM Hartnell College, Salinas The Western Stage is proud to announce a one night staged-reading of Academy-award winning screenwriter and Western Stage alum Dustin Lance Black's newest documentary play "8" on Friday July 20th at 7:30pm in the Mainstage Theater. "8" demystifies the debate around marriage equality by chronicling the landmark trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger. Using the actual court transcripts from the federal trial of California's Prop. 8 and first-hand interviews, "8" shows both sides of the debate in a moving 90-minute play. Learn about the historical context of marriage and the human cost of discrimination from expert testimony. The play reveals the arguments used to justify bans on marriage for gay and lesbian couples. Directly following the performance, join us for a Q/A talkback with community partners and playwright Dustin Lance Black, who will be attending the event as the guest of honor. "8" is one of many great events 2x4BASH at The Western Stage has to offer this summer and is presented in association with: Hartnell Pride, American Civil Liberties Union of Monterey County, Marriage Equality of the Monterey Peninsula (MEMP), Monterey County Pride, TGIF Monterey, Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) of Monterey County, CSUMB Health & Wellness Services, The Diversity Center of Santa Cruz, Nonprofit Alliance of Monterey County (NAMC)/Social Equity Committee, National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) and Rainbow Panels and Friends.
