NEW at the farm: Heartland Winter Camps!

Barn Time and Fall Camp both concluded earlier this month and it's always hard for everyone to say goodbye. Friendships are formed all around between counselors, program volunteers, campers and animals, though the animals don't realize that their loyal friends aren't coming back for the long, cold months ahead.  

But not THIS year! Camps will once again be in session with the addition of two new options: Saturday Winter Camp and Winter Break Camp! Now kids can come and spend time with their animal friends and do their favorite camp activities, like barn chores, and undertake some new ones, like sledding!
Our 5th Annual Feast for the Turkeys - a heartwarming success!
 

Despite the chilly temperature and snow the day before, we had a wonderful turnout at our 5th Annual Thanksgiving for the Turkeys, which was held on November 22. 

Turkeys, ducks, chickens and Gracie the goose enjoyed a colorful, bountiful feast, and afterwards guests took barn tours and shared snacks with the rest of the Heartland animals. Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate our feathered guests of honor!

Meet Dr. Stephanie!
Dr. Stephanie Hirsbrunner of Country View Veterinary Services has been involved with Heartland almost from the very beginning. As the main veterinarian for all of Heartland's 80 animals, she makes sure every animal gets the care and medical attention they need and deserve. Dr. Stephanie also gave HFS staff her advice about how a vet facility and quarantine area should be set up in a shelter (everything from products and equipment to layout and design!) Read more...
 
Thank you, Miller & Son's!
Miller's donates produce for our 80 animals multiple times per week and donated over 3,000 pounds of produce total last year! Their generous donations allow our animals to always have fresh fruits and veggies added to their meals. Our pigs, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens are so grateful! We can't thank this local business enough for all they do for Heartland.
Animal Spotlight: Frances the sheep
Frances came to Heartland with his buddy Bertram way back in 2010! They were Heartland's third and fourth animals, so they are founding fuzzy members of our sanctuary. Frances is a big, sweet boy who enjoys munching on grass or hay, stealing from the produce table when he gets a chance, and taking naps in the sun when the weather gets chilly. Frances' coat gets very fluffy in the winter, making him look like a cloud with legs! Frances' hobbies include nap times with his buddy Bertram, taking little strolls in the pasture, and eating bananas.

We need your help!
We are looking for volunteers who can shovel or snow-blow this winter! The driveway is plowed, but help is needed to keep walkways, stairs and parking spots clean and safe for volunteers. If you are available for this type of outdoor work, please email Alecia with your availability and contact information. (Bonus - You also get to hang with goats in coats!)
