Volunteer with Camp Heartland!
Heartland Farm Sanctuary provides a beautiful space for kids to come together to learn about the many ways they can make the world a better place. Camp Heartland is looking for committed people to be volunteer counselors this summer (1 week (or more) commitment, please). Week-long sessions run June 8th through August 14th. Interested? Know someone else who might be? Contact Programs Director Stephanie at Stephanie.Weis@HeartlandFarmSanctuary.org
May Volunteer of the Month: Christina Skasa

Christina is Heartland's grant-writing extraordinaire! This animal lover is a full-time professional grant writer and has been volunteering her writing expertise for the past two years. Christina's work directly impacts the growth of our farm animal shelter and people programs, so we are very lucky to have her as part of our family!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? I work as a grants specialist at Lakeshore Technical College in Cleveland, WI (just north of Sheboygan). I am also pursuing a Master of Science in Anthrozoology through Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. Anthrozoology is the study of nonhuman and human animal interactions. The program is mostly online, but I travel to Buffalo each semester for four days of onsite coursework.

2. How long have you been volunteering at Heartland? About two years.

Volunteer appreciation PIG-NIC

Join us for Heartland's Volunteer Appreciation PIG-NIC at our barn on Monday, May 25th. The festivities begin at 12 PM with old-fashioned games, barbeque and picnic food favorites, and a chance for you to visit with your farm animal friends. Bring your friends and family and come ready to have a good time with the rest of the Heartland crew!

What's new at the Heartland barn?
Many of you know Lily, our blind potbellied pig. When she arrived at Heartland she was so overweight she couldn't walk. It took her well over a year to start to trust us and feel safe enough to leave her stall. Now at a much healthier weight, Lily has been exploring outside more than ever. Barn staff will soon start introducing her to our 3 other mini pigs in the hopes they can all be great friends! Stay tuned...

Nellie & Lion - Living a life of luxury!

Nellie and Lion, Heartland's two former barn cats, have been adopted by Joan, a dedicated animal care volunteer. Nellie and Lion are fitting right in and spend their days playing, romping around Joan's home and sleeping in comfy cat beds. We're so happy they have found their furever home!

Green thumb? We could use your help!

Heartland recently started two gardens and we're looking for your help to get these plots blooming with flowers, fruits and veggies!

What we need: plants, seeds, hand trowels, hand cultivators, compost, greenhouse gift cards and anything else garden-related that you would be able/willing to donate. (Tool donations do not need to be new!) The next time you're at a greenhouse, please consider picking up an extra veggie or herb plant, or a few marigolds (to deter pests). We'll be planting flowers, squash, pumpkins, bush beans, tomatoes, carrots and radishes. What else do YOU want to see growing at HFS?

We're also looking for gardeners! If you would like to donate or get your hands dirty, contact Stephanie at Stephanie.Weis@HeartlandFarmSanctuary.org.
Animal Spotlight: Ellie the Pig
Ellie came to Heartland in the spring of 2013 at the age of 1 1/2. Sadly, she lived in an abusive household with a man who would kick and hit her. This obviously led her to be very distrusting of people. When she first arrived at our barn she was scared, skittish, and wary of us, she would even snap and be angry at the slightest touch. Throughout her time at Heartland we have seen her blossom into a happier, healthier pig.
