Heartland Farm Sanctuary is home to 80+ acres of prairie, forest and pasture land!  Volunteers are needed to help maintain fences, remove weeds and invasive species, and mow. If you or your group want to help Heartland be stewards of the land, please contact Alecia at Alecia.Torres@HeartlandFarmSanctuary.org for more information.
Meet Homestead Society Member Kay Kriewald

Kay is a long-time volunteer and a recent member of the Heartland Homestead Society. Below she shares how she discovered Heartland, why she decided to donate, and what keeps her coming back (besides the baby goat snuggles, of course).

1. How did you find out about Heartland? I saw an ad for a Barn Dance that Heartland was holding as a fundraiser. I couldn't make it to the event but looked up Heartland and knew it was for me. I attended a volunteer orientation the next day and was volunteering a week later.

2. How long have you been volunteering with HFS? I started in December 2011.

3. Why do you choose to support HFS? Over the years I have seen so many amazing changes at Heartland. This includes watching animals who came to the barn sick and neglected become happy and healthy, to the expansion of programs and services that Heartland now offers. The animal-assisted therapy programs have been expanded to include Barn Time and Animal Hearts and Camp Heartland is bigger and better than ever. Read more...

Mykel, a recent barn visitor, shares a special moment with Diana during a workday at the farm. Heartland's animals and volunteers are taking full advantage of the beautiful weather and spending a lot of quality time in the great outdoors.
Program Spotlight: Veterans Group starting at Heartland

This summer, Heartland will offer weekly groups for Veterans and their families at our barn. This group will be a fun and relaxing way for Veterans and their family members to connect at the farm while providing light care to our rescued animals.  Kids love it, and so do parents! We are looking for Veterans to help us facilitate this group (as volunteers), AND for families wanting to participate weekly for 1-2 months at a time.  If you are a Veteran and are interested in either opportunity, please contact Dana at

Have you ever met a duck? Now's your chance!

We invite you to come out to Heartland Farm Sanctuary to meet our wonderful animals and learn about the important work we do for them and the people in our community! No matter when you choose to visit us, you're guaranteed to have a great time! We offer public and private tours, and even school tours!
Animal Spotlight: Ellie the Pig
Ellie came to us in the spring of 2013 at the age of 1 1/2. Sadly, she lived in an abusive household with a man who would kick and hit her. This obviously led her to be very distrusting of people. When she first arrived at our barn she was scared, skittish, and wary of us; she would even snap and be angry at the slightest touch. Throughout her time at Heartland we have seen her blossom into a happier, healthier pig. She is still dramatic (no question there!) but she is much more trusting of all of us

Art open house to benefit Heartland
Fine Earth Studio is holding an art open house benefit event for Heartland Farm Sanctuary. The studio will donate 25% of all gallery sales for the day to Heartland Farm Sanctuary. Local handmade pottery by Sara Gordon and others will be available.

You'll have the opportunity to make your own earrings for $5/pair, participate in pottery wheel demonstrations and fashion your favorite farm animal friend out of clay! The studio will fire and glaze your piece and have it ready to collect later in June.
