Many educational interventions have been developed to address the "achievement gap" between Black and Latino students and their White and Asian peers, but few interventions specifically identify the unconscious bias held by many educators that contributes to this gap.
A school that we're calling Bay High set out to do so.
In this high school, faculty have joined together to create professional development to help teachers to identify and interrupt the racism that often plays out in classroom instruction and management, negatively impacting students of color. READ MORE

 Faculty Profile: Jamal Cooks Helping Incarcerated Young People Realize Their Worth

The so-called "school-to-prison pipeline" has essentially funneled many promising young students from school to prison, where potential talent withers, rather than into higher education opportunities that may lead to lucrative and productive jobs and a lifetime of contribution.
Dr. Jamal Cooks, Professor of Secondary Education at San Francisco State University, is focusing on helping students caught up in the system find their worth.
Working with the Positive Communication Practices Rights of Passage program, Cooks plans to teach students in the juvenile justice system's maximum security units how to express themselves through writing.
"I see myself as a worker. I see myself as a youth advocate. I see myself as being a vehicle to being the voice for voiceless youth," Cooks said. READ MORE

The Stanford Social Innovation Review calls SFSU Ed.D. grad Avani Patel ('14) an inspiration to students for her work as an apprentice in the Social Impact Careers program. She focused her apprenticeship on problems in education, from the perspectives of teacher, administrator, and philanthropic manager, working to contribute to a climate of social change.
SF State Educational Leadership professor Maika Watanabe, Ph.D. has published an article focused on using assessments to promote collaborative learning. Find her in: Mathematics Teacher, Volume 109, Issue 4.
