NakamotoBerkeley High: Youth Agency, Activism, & Solidarity for Racial Justice

On November 5, 2015, more than 1000 Berkeley High School (BHS) students peacefully walked out of their classes in an act of unity against racism following the discovery of a racist threat message on one of their library computers the day prior.

The protesters marched down city streets to UC Berkeley's Sproul Plaza where a rally was held. The walkout was organized and orchestrated by Berkeley High School's Black Student Union (BSU).

The inciting computer message referenced a lynching, called for the death of black students, and indicated support for the KKK. READ MORE 
Educational Leaders Focused on Social Justice

RobinsonOut of the Mouths of Babes: Hope & Hopelessness in Middle School Students of Color

girls_on_school_bus.jpg The word "hope" has become a buzzword in the media and social and political movements to describe optimism toward building a better society.
 
In a country where there is no shortage of hopelessness in poor communities of color, the purpose of my research was to investigate the impact that environmental factors have on the hope levels of a group of low income Black and Latino middle school students and how that hope then impacted their academic achievement.

In this section, we call attention to the exemplary work and achievements of our students,  graduates, and faculty.
 
One of SF State's 2015 Ed.D. Cohort members is weaving community action into education to help students connect what they are learning. Roam Romagnoli ('18) was featured in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat for her work showing SRJC students that education can be about changing lives through lessons in class and out.
 
SF State Ed.D. grad Jeanne Knapp ('12) is now an advocate for Collective Impact!, a consulting firm whose mission is to help organizations and communities build capacity, increase their ability to achieve their mission and thrive.

SF State Ed.D. doctoral candidate Timothy Weekes ('16) has been selected to serve as a discussant at the American Educational Research Association's (AERA) annual meeting in Washington D.C. this April. The Paper Session is called: "New Directions in Charter School Practice and Evaluation."  Weekes also joined Calsoyas Group as a Research Analyst focusing on "culturally relevant education and leadership." The group works with educators to help realize the transformative promise of public education.
 
SF State Ed.D. grad Christine Solari ('15) is now Administrative Director of the new Stanford Medicine Teaching and Mentoring Academy. Her initial role will be to oversee the launch of this cutting edge academy, and she will be pivotal to its growth and development.
 
SF State Ed.D second year student Katrina Keating ('17) recently returned from Nepal, where she delivered books and clothing in response to last year's earthquake.
 
SF State Educational Leadership professor Dr. David Hemphill is featured in two new books! He co-authored chapters in each book focused on teaching in globalized third spaces and transnational spaces. Find him in:
