Prospective Students
From the Director - Dr. Robert Gabriner

Our Educational Leadership Doctoral Program continues to prosper.  During the past five years, we have graduated 76 students, and we have 57 current students in the pipeline including a new cohort of 14. In this issue of our newsletter we will introduce you to our newest cohort including Gina Baleria, principal of Baleria Creative, who is helping us to develop a digital and social media strategy. You can now follow us on Facebook! And finally, we will tell you about the newest project headed up by Ed.D. program faculty member Dr. Jeffrey Duncan-Andrade, who has founded Roses in Concrete Community School in East Oakland.  You can read his interview in SF State Magazine.

Here is some additional news of interest:
  • Dr. Vincent Matthews (2007 cohort) was just appointed as the State Administrator for Inglewood Unified School District by State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson. Dr. Matthews was previously the Superintendent of San Jose Unified School District.
     
  • Dr. Armineh Noravian (2011 cohort) left her position as Coordinator for San Francisco State's Metro Academy of Engineering to join Central Arizona College where she is a Research Associate.  Among other projects, Armineh is currently working with faculty to develop, improve, and evaluate alternative developmental mathematics programs at her college.
     
  • Omar Murillo (2012 cohort), the interim coordinator of the TRiO Student Support Services program at CSU Monterey Bay, was named Kika de la Garza Education Fellow for 2015. This fellowship is awarded to faculty and staff from Hispanic Serving Institutions to travel to Washington DC to learn about policymaking with faculty and staff of the. U.S. Department of Agriculture. Omar traveled to Washington this past June.
     
  • Valerie Royaltey-Quandt (2013 cohort) recently joined the Campbell Union High School District as Director of Student Service, Assessment and Accountability.  She had previously worked as the Principal and International baccalaureate Primary Years Programme Coordinator for Lexington Elementary School.

Spotlight: Dr. Jeffrey Duncan Andrade

EDDL faculty member Jeffrey Duncan-Andrade has spent his career developing critical pedagogy and community responsive teaching.  He continues to teach at San Francisco State University and lecture around the world, but he has recently opened a new laboratory school in East Oakland.  Joining him are program alumnae Dr. Vidrale Franklin (2008 cohort) as Head of School and Dr. Darrick Smith (2009 cohort) as a member of the Board of Directors.

We are now recruiting for the 2016-2017 school year.  Our students come from p-12 and community college classrooms, district offices, and community organizations, but all are committed to increasing educational equity, fighting for social justice, and eliminating the opportunity and achievement gaps.  If you have ever considered earning a doctorate, or know someone who is ready to move forward as a transformative educational leader, join us at one of our upcoming information sessions.
