About Our Graduates and Current Students

About_Students

News continues to trickle in about the good work of our 75 graduates and 47 current students of the Educational Leadership Program at SF State.

Dr. Scott Cline (2012) was recently elected President of the California Association of Financial Administrators...Dr. Armineh Noravian (2014) is now a research analyst in the Office of Institutional Research and Planning at Central Arizona College...Dr. Avani Patel (2012) writes that "I'm taking some of what I learned through the Sequoia-Ravenswood experiences and applying them to another district, Palo Alto Unified." The article about Avani's new project can be found here.  Suzy Williams (cohort 2012) writes that she has been "appointed the Director of Special Education for the Castro Valley Unified School District which includes providing direction for the MAC SELPA or Mid Alameda County Special Education Local Plan Area. The department is currently in need of re-structuring to better meet the needs of all students. I will be working with other district staff to develop an organizational structure that ensures that ALL students are provided the necessary supports to be successful both inside and outside of the classroom. This position supports more than 700 students in the district and provides supervision of both certificated and classified employees, while also providing oversight for the MAC SELPA. It is also important to note that a past graduate of the SFSU program, Dr. Darrick Smith (2012), assistant professor in the USF Educational Leadership Program, is working with district administrative staff to ensure that all efforts, programs, and policies are developed through an equity lens. His expertise is guiding the district through a process that helps to ensure that ALL Castro Valley students are successful....and congratulations go to Brittany Prince and Vanessa Mercado (cohort 2014) who have been awarded scholarships from the Graduate College of Education for their continuing work in the Educational Leadership Program.

Applying Cultura in the Community College Counseling Practice

This is the abstract from an article in the Community College Journal of Research and Practice (November 2014) by Dr. Blanca Arteaga, a 2013 graduate of our program.  Dr. Arteaga is a member of the Counseling Department at Gavilan College.

Latino students represent the fastest-growing population in the state of California, the United States, and the California Community College (CCC) system. Unfortunately, compared to other ethnic groups, Latino community college students continue to lag academically. Given the importance of counseling services and the scarce research related to community college students and community college counseling services, this study explored how 26 first-generation, low-income, Latino community college students perceived, negotiated, and developed a relationship with their community college counselor. Using a qualitative grounded theory research design, participants' counseling experiences were captured through face-to-face semistructured in-depth interviews, and a theoretical model was developed. This study extended the literature on the importance of community college counseling services in assisting and motivating students to reach transfer and graduation and emphasized students' positive and negative counseling experiences. The research findings suggest a need to improve community college counseling services. Thus, based on the research findings and other published research, this study proposes a set of the following: (a) guidelines for applying cultura (culture) to community college counseling that can assist relationship building between students and counselors; (b) questions that can be included in students' evaluation of counselors; (c) counselor interview questions that may elicit behavioral response and assess cultural competence; and (d) community college students' preferred counselor characteristics that may be used by hiring committees.
