PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Lakeview Families,
Lately I have been thinking a great deal about community and about the relationships that create a community like Lakeview. A school is neither a building nor an organizational chart: a school is a web of relationships between families, students, teachers, and staff. One of the most important ways we build relationships is with tradition, like our recent Veteran's Day assembly. Our students put on an incredible celebration honoring our veterans, past and present, to a standing-room-only crowd. Gratitude, like that we heard in more than 500 sweet voices singing "thank you," forges deeper relationships.
Some of the most important relationships in the Lakeview community are teacher-to-teacher. To that end, we are taking another group of teachers to the Professional Learning Community Institute, this time in Salt Lake City, next week (Nov 16-18). As you know, a pioneering group of grade-level leads attended last year with Rebekah, kicking off the PLC model at Lakeview in earnest. This year we are taking our two new grade level leads (Ms. Jensen in K and Ms. Coghlan in 2nd) as well as our SpEd (Ms. Crain), Safety Net (Ms. Porter), and ELL (Ms. Pitsch) teachers. This conference will further hone our focus on how better teacher collaboration can increase student learning.
Last, communities need time to talk. To that end Lakeview hosted, in connection with a PTSA-sponsored initiative we are calling the Lakeview Family Network, our first parent coffee yesterday as an informal opportunity for families to drop in and speak with myself, Ms. Levinson, and PTSA reps. This go around we focused on families new to Lakeview, particularly K-1 families and 2-5 families new to Lakeview. We will continue to refine these informal "coffees" but are excited to be experimenting with another community-building avenue.
Thank you for all your do in helping build a community as rich and deep as the Lakeview community.
Thanks - Steve

Help Wanted
The PTSA is still looking for someone to take on the role of Advocacy Chair--in a nutshell you would be helping Lakeview deal with the issue of overcrowding that is expected to become a bigger problem in the next few years. If you would like to find out more about the Advocacy Chair position, please contact Tana or Ivana at lakptsapresident@gmail.com.
We are also need a couple more parent volunteers to help with this year's carnival event. The carnival is always a favorite here at Lakeview but we need some help in pulling it all together! We are still looking for two more parents - one to manage the team of volunteers and one to oversee the entire event.
We need to have our leads identified prior to the winter holiday break session so that there is enough time to set the date, manage all the planning and execution of the carnival. If we don't have the leads in place, we won't be able to have this event this year. If you are interested in one of these roles, please reach out to PTSA Special Events Chair Susie McDonald.

Accessing the Field
Our new turf field is a district/Google/Kirkland collaboration. The LWSD donated the land, Google paid for the turf field, and Kirkland agreed to maintain and administer the new city-owned field. Per this agreement, Lakeview has sole use of the field every school day until 4pm. School use always takes priority on the field, though as good neighbors we want to give proper notice through the city so outside groups can adjust accordingly.
If your family, community organization, or business would like to use the field outside of school hours you would schedule through Nicci Osborn at the city of Kirkland (nosborn@kirklandwa.gov or 425.587.3342). There are different requirements depending on the type of request, for example, for league requests - insurance is required, rosters, etc. For non-high risk requests, a simple application may be all that's required. They will help all customers navigate through the right process.
Thanks - Steve
