PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Hello Lakeview Families,
It is hard to believe it is already October! With the changing of the seasons comes October Parent/Teacher/Student conferences. Conferences provide an opportunity for your student to share with you and the teacher her or his goals for the coming year, as well as an opportunity for you to connect directly with your
student's teacher.

If you have not already signed up for a conference appointment, you can do so by clicking here: http://bit.ly/LakeviewOctoberConferences. We will be making a reminder call on Monday, Oct 5th for any student that does not have a scheduled conference appointment as we want to make sure all 520 of our students have conference appointment scheduled before sign-ups close on Wednesday, Oct 7.

Also, we want to thank all of you for your support through our Amazon Wishlist. This last week in particular our teachers received many items they were looking for through the wishlist: we could not ask for a more supportive community!

I hope to see you at the ribbon cutting ceremony for our new turf field on Thursday, October 8th at 3:45pm.

Sincerely,

Steve

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming up during the week of October 12-15. The fair will be open on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday before and after school. If you'd like to help set up, work at the fair, or help take down, you can sign up via this Sign-up Genius link.

More ways to help:

·  Try the library's Amazon Wish List. There are many titles to choose from. Picture books, nonfiction, middle grade fiction, and much more.  Click here to access the wish list.

·  Donate a book to the Lakeview Library for your student's birthday, and you will support our library and create a tribute to your student that will last for years to come. Fill out the form and return to school with a check payable to Lakeview PTSA. A $20 donation is recommended per book. Your student will receive a note before his or her birthday to pick out a book from an assortment of books pre-selected by Mr. Coulter and the talented group of library staffers. If you prefer a specific title, contact Mr. Coulter before your child's birthday so that we can secure the book.  A special bookplate will be permanently placed inside the book stating that it was donated in your student's honor. During the month of your student's birthday (or half birthday for summer birthdays), the book will be presented during his/her class library time and the birthday, and your student will be the first one to check out the book.

Also a reminder that author Jon Scieszka will be at Lakeview for Grades 3-5 on October 7, and that Soman Chainani, author of School for Good and Evil, will be at Lakeview on October 22 for grades 3-5.

GOT A CAMERA?  THE LAKEVIEW YEARBOOK COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU!

Everyone say cheese! In the Lakeview Yearbook, classroom candid photos pages are always a favorite with students. The Yearbook Committee is desperately seeking several more photographers. A class without a photographer means a class without a candid photos page. If your student's teacher does not have a parent volunteer, we will have to restructure the yearbook to exclude the candids page for their class. Following are classes without a yearbook photographer:

K: LaPoint
2nd: Johnson
3rd: Levinson
4th: Friend
4th: Phipps

Specifics: Classroom Yearbook Photographers need to submit 20 candid photos of small groups of students in February. Photos should be taken during class (parties, art class, etc.) or field trips (no sports team photos). Digital camera required; a simple point and shoot is perfect for the task! (Note: most cell phone photos are not appropriate for print but if that's all you have, please send an email and we will run a test).

The Yearbook Committee will contact you directly with more specific information regarding types of photos required and submission instructions. If interested please email Jenny Carlson by 10/7 atfiveftjen@gmail.com.

GROWING PAINS: HELP DECIDE OUR FUTURE

Did you know LWSD is the fastest growing district in the state? We are inching our way to be the 4th largest in WA...talk about growing pains! We are now 5 elementary schools short capacity-wise, and this is spilling into middle- and high-school overcrowding already. The district has heard your frustrations loud and clear and has been working with a task force made up of our friends and neighbors to put together strategies for addressing this challenge. Your input and feedback are critical to ensure we keep providing great schools to our students! Even if you've attended past events; even if you feel you've been pushing too many rocks uphill...NEVER GIVE UP. If you've never attended an event, now is the time!

You can to share your feedback at:

- Oct. 7th, 6pm, Rose Hill Middle School (FOR THE ENTIRE DISTRICT)

If you cannot attend in person, please take a few moments to learn about the districts choices, and fill out the survey here by OCTOBER 11th.

CALLING ALL STUDENT ARTISTS!
IT'S REFLECTIONS TIME AGAIN!

The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents to express themselves through their own original works of art.

Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme. Themes are selected from thousands of ideas submitted by students to National PTA's Reflections Theme Search.

The 2015-2016 theme is:  "Let Your Imagination Fly."

A student may submit an entry in any of six arts areas. Only original works of art are accepted. The six art areas are: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video and Choreography/Dance.

Entry forms are available through your teacher or in the magazine rack in the school lobby.
