Principal's Corner
Lakeview Families,
As you know, state testing is rapidly approaching. What used to be the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) is now the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA). It is a test that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and is administered to all third, fourth, and fifth graders. Students are tested in the areas of Math as well as English/Language Arts (ELA). The ELA portion includes a writing, reading, and listening component. Our teachers and students are working hard at preparing our students and providing practice opportunities for them. Our first test will be administered to the fourth grade at the end of this month.
There are a lot of things you can do to prepare your students for this test. Prior to the test it is critical that your students eat a good breakfast, get a full night's sleep, and are relaxed. Now is a great time to talk to your student about the importance of standardized tests, being prepared, and taking them seriously. It's important, though, to accompany that with a reminder that these assessments reflect important, but a small slice of information about them. They aren't a measure of intelligence, success, or personality. It simply is one data point that helps us better learn how and what to teach. Having this conversation should help reduce any text anxiety.
As always, and this goes for students of all ages, ensuring that your child is reading daily for at least thirty minutes at a time and is reading books that are level and ability appropriate is one of the best ways to prepare your student for these tests. Simple exposure to text and a practice of stamina reaps big rewards when it comes to state testing.
Thanks for your support of this big and important undertaking!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Rebekah Westra
