Principal WestraPrincipal's Corner

Lakeview Families,

We sure had a lot of sad little Seahawk fans arrive at school on Monday. February can only get better from here! Last week we celebrated the halfway point of the school year. It's hard to believe that we are on the back half of the school year now.

We are thrilled to report that over 99% of our parents attended their student conference. Conferences are something that our teachers take very seriously and spend a lot of time preparing for so that they are a valuable experience for you and your student. We encourage you to continue to keep these lines of communication open to help maximize your child's growth and to continue working closely with your child on his/her goals.

Our teachers are amazing and are still recuperating from an intense week last week! I want to acknowledge all of their hard work but I also want to take a moment to thank all of our classified staff for all they do for so many of our students. Our paraprofessionals, instructional assistants, custodians, and secretaries are crucial players in the daily function of our school. Their jobs are not always easy yet they remain dedicated to our students. If you see one of them, take a minute to thank them for all that they do.

Sincerely,

Rebekah Westra

School Safety Awareness Meeting Thurs 2/19!

Join us for an Emergency/Safety Awareness Parent information Night February 19th at 6:30PM.  The PTSA will host two Guest Speakers who will address Emergency and Safety planning in our School and Community.  Our first speaker, Principal Rebekah Westra, will be sharing information and answering questions about Lakeview's Emergency Reunification plan.  Our second speaker Dr. Pattijean Hooper will share Kirkland's Emergency Management Plan. PTSA Purchasing New Netbooks with Jog-A-Thon Proceeds! Using some of the proceeds from the Jog-A-Thon this past fall the PTSA will be purchasing one classroom's worth of netbooks as well as a netbook charging station! Congratulations, Leopards and thanks to all who donated or volunteered towards the success of our Jog-A-Thon!

PTSA Board Nominations Coming-Are You In?
It's that time of year to begin nominating next year's PTSA Board. Some of our board members including President and Vice President as well as numerous committee chairs (Special Events, After School Programs) and coordinators are stepping down as their terms have been served--and their kids are moving on! We Need You! Think about the activities, after school activities, academic programs and assemblies that the PTSA provides to our school. There is always a person or persons behind all of these activities! Consider joining the board and helping us to continue great works at Lakeview Elementary! For more information please email President Megan Gardner at lakptsapresident@gmail.com !

Kirkland Nourshing Network Food Supplies Needed!

This year, we began a new partnership with Kirkland Nourishing Network. This group provides large food boxes over Winter, Mid-Winter, and Spring breaks for Lakeview families in need of extra-support. We are beyond grateful for the support this organization has provided for our families. It makes a world of difference for our students during their breaks when they don't have access to school lunches.

This season, Kirkland Nourishing Network is short on supplies to fill their boxes, so they are seeking new neighbors who are interesting in helping out. Generally, a family commits to purchasing a box of food to donate. You may also partner with other families to share a box to fill. If you would like more information on how you can help families over mid-winter break, please contact Kendra Petkau at kpetkau@gmail.com or 206-551-3503.

Sincerely,

Marcee Ben-Menachem

School Counselor

PTSA Council offers Parent University

The Lake Washington School District and Lake Washington PTSA Council are pleased to present a series of parent education courses for the 2014-15 school year. The first program, "Parent University," will be held on Saturday, February 28 from 1-4 p.m. in the Lake Washington School District Resource Center Board Room (16250 NE 74th Street, Redmond, WA 98052).

Parents and caregivers will learn about support, academic stress, brain development and technology as it relates to their school-age child from three experts in their fields. Participants will be separated into groups according to their child's grade level so the information will be more specific to their needs. Topics include Academic Stress, Brain Development, & Internet Safety. This program is for parents/caregivers of children of all ages.

These programs are offered free of charge for LWSD parents and community members. No preregistration is required. Questions or comments are always welcome at parent.ed@lwptsa.net.
